In the 1930s, Prof. Levin
served on Mayor Frank
Murphy's labor and employ-
ment committees. He be-
came a noted authority on
labor and industry and his
name appeared in every
issue of the Directory of
American Scholars between
1942 and 1958. He is also
listed in "Who's Who in
America," "Who's Who in
World Jewry" and in "Who's
Who in Jews in the World of
Science."
Prof. Levin was president
of the Jewish Social Services
Bureau, now the Jewish
Family and Children's Serv-
ice. After his retirement
from Wayne State in 1958,
he was president of the Jew-
ish National Fund in Detroit.
He has writeen a book on
Thomas Malthus and pre-
pares weekly lectures on
social issues for the senior
adult program at the 10 Mile
Jewish Center.
Prof. Levin and his wife,
the late Lillian Keidan, had
four children. They are: Dr.
Joseph H. of Weston, Mass.,
Mrs. Stanley Friedman, Dr.
Herbert G. Levin and Mrs.
Bernard J. Cantor.

Wayne State University's
economics department will
honor Professor Samuel M.
Levin with a volume of his
essays to commemorate his
85th birthday June 6.
Prof. Levin, author of
many essays on labor rela-
tions, unionism and tech-
nology in America, was born
in Poland and is the son of
the late Rabbi Judah Leib
Levin, former head of the
Orthodox rabbis of Detroit.
In 1965, Prof. Levin was
guest of honor at a dedica-
tion dinner for Yeshivath
Beth Yehuda, the school
named in honor of his father.
He began teaching at the
old Central High School in
1913 and later became the
chairman of the social sci-
ence department at the De-
troit Junior College and the
College of the City of De-
troit, later to become Wayne
University. He held the
chairmanship of the eco-
nomics department until 1953
and retired from teaching in
1958 on his 70th birthday.
At Wayne, the Samuel M.
Levin Award Fund was
established by family and
friends. The cash award is
given annually to the stu-

imous approval to a proposed
high-rise apartment building
for senior citizens on the
west side of Greenfield Rd.,
north of 10 Mile and adjacent
to the Proposed L696 exten-
sion.
City planner Donald Gross
estimates the proposed build-
ing could accommodate about
200 residents. They would be
able to walk to nearby shops

streets.
