Austrian Bund Joins With Zionist Body

VIENNA (ZINS) — The
local Zionist Federation has
accepted an application of
the Austrian Socialist Bund
to be affiliated collectively
with the Zionist movement.
This development takes on
special significance, since a
majority of the Austrian
Jewish community in Vienna
are Bund members.
Traditionally, Zionism was
considered by the Band to
be a deviationary and reac-
tionary ideology, which had
no prospects of realization.
The philosophy of the Bund
was based on the principle
that Jews must battle for
their civil rights in every
country of residence and that
their salvation was bound up
with the triumph of the so-
cialist idea throughout the
world.

Shavuot Defined

Shavuot marked the end of
the barley and the beginning
of the wheat. harvest. Biblical
names for the festival are
"Hag Shavuot" (Feast of the
Weeks), "Yom ha-Bikurim"
(The Day of the First Fruit),
and "Hag ha-Katzir" (The
Harvest Feast). The Bible
does not show that Shavuot
is anything else but an agr-
cultural festival, and it is as
such, as the "Hagigat ha-
Bikurim," that today's kib-
utzim in Israel are celebrat-
ing this feast. To them, it
indicates the peak of the first
grain harvest and the first
ripe fruits.

According to the Encyclo-
peda Judaica, it is possible
that the character of the fes-
tival changed at an early
period because the members
of the Pharisaic party, as
town dwellers, had little feel-
ing for a purely agricultural
feast.
The earliest clear refer-
ences to Shavuot as the anni-
versary of the giving of the
Torah come from the 3rd
Century. Encyclopedia Jud-
aica quotes that "the saying
of R. Eleazar that all authori-
ties agree that it is necessary
to rejoice with good food and
wine on Azeret because it
was the day on which the
Torah was given." "Azeret"
is the rabbinic name for Sha-
vuot. The meaning of this
designation is uncertain, but
generally translated as
"solemn a ssembl y." The
transformation of the festi-
val was based on the biblical
verse: "In the third month
after the children of Israel
were gone forth out of the
land of Egypt, the same day
came they into the wilderness
of Sinai." After Passover and
Sukot, both connected with
the Exodus, Shavuot also be-

came linked with his event.
Leviticus states: "From
the day after the Shabat, the
day that you bring the sheaf
of wave-offering you shall
count (until) seven full weeks
have elapsed; you shall count
50 days, until the day after
the seventh .week; then you
shall bring an offering of new
grain to the Lord." It is also
stated in Leviticus that the
sheaf was waved on the day
after the Sabbath during the
Passover festival.

Encyclopedia Judaica
states, "that in some med-
ieval communities it was cus-
tomary to introduce children
to the Hebrew school on Sha-
vuot, the season of giving the
Torah. The child . . was
given cakes, honey, a n d
sweets, 'that the Torah might
be sweet on his lips' ".
"It is a home custom," con-
tinues the Encyclopeda Jud-
aica, "to eat dairy products
on Shavuot because the
Torah is compared to milk
(Song of Songs 4:11) and be-
cause the law of the first
fruits is placed in juxtaposi-
tion to a law concerning milk
(Ex. 23:19). In some commu-
nities it is customary to eat
triangular pancakes stuffed
with meat or cheese because
the Torah is of three parts
(Pentateuch, Prophets and
Hagiographa) and was given
to a people of three parts
(priests, Levites and Israel-
ites) on the third month
through Moses who was the
third child of his parents."
