Nathan, former peace pilot and cafe owner, has finally reached his Mediterranean destina- tion after a harrowing voy- age across the Atlantic ocean. Nathan, a self-styled peace- nik, broadcasts from his ship called the Peace Ship in the Mediterranean, 12 miles from Ashdod. He opens his news and musical broadcasts with, "This is the voice of peace, broadcasting on 1540 kilocy- cles from somewhere in the Mediterranean." The open- ing, spoken in English, French, Hebrew and Arabic, is accompanied by a John Lennon song, "Give Peace a Chance." The ship is a 33-year-old, 570-ton Dutch costal freigh- ter that Nathan bought in the Netherlands in 1969. The ship was renovated in New York and equipped with air condi- tioning and advanced broad- cast studios with two power- ful 25,000-watt transmitters at a cost of $250,000. Aboard the ship, Nathan explained his mission to re- porters. "We want to start a genuine dialogue among the people of the Middle East," he said. "We are go- ing to be out here broadcast- ing live debates and dia- logues among ordinary Is- raelis and Arabs to get their views on how to solve the problem. The politicians and diplomats have all failed, now let's give the people a chance." He pledged not to leave the ship until peace was reached in the Middle East. "I may grow grey waiting," he said, "but I mean it." The ship's international crew consists of a French captain and three seamen, three Americans including a Roman Catholic 'priest, two Filipinos, a Yugoslav, a Can- adian and a British disc jockey who broadcast for several years from a pirate ship in the North Sea. Each receives a token salary of $100 a month. Contributed supplies and equipment include 10,000 cans of soup and spaghetti from the Campbell Soup Co., fur- niture from the Salvation Army, and half the cost of the transmitters from a re- ligious foundation.
