HIDDEN TREASURES: When one visits David Ben-
Gurion at his residence in Sde Boker, one cannot escape
noticing the many Bibles on his desk in his library—large
Bibles, small Bibles, various editions published in various
countries, at various times, in various languages.
To the first Prime Minister of the State of Israel, the
Bible—as he explained to me—is not only a book of Jewish
history and ethics, but also a guiding volume to many
natural resources in the country which, he believes, are
still deeply buried under the sands, not yet rediscovered
but awaiting rediscovery.
Sold on this idea, Ben-Gurion cites as example the fact
that the Timneh copper mines in the Negev were discovered
by studying the period of King Solomon. Also that during
the siege of Jerusalem in the early months of the War of
Independence—when the city was completely isolated from
the rest of Israel, suffering from lack of food, water and
ammunition to repulse the Arabs—it was through a hint in
the Bible that the existence of an ancient long-forgotten
road to 'Jerusalem was discovered. It later became Israel's
"Burma Road" carved out through rough mountain trails
leading to direct contact with the capital and freeing the
city from siege.
Ben-Gurion believes that Israel was not only a land of
milk and honey in ancient times. He asserts that the area
had bronze. silver, lead, tin and other metals from which
tools, weapons and ornaments were made as far back as
5,000 years ago; the Bible refers also to gold. He therefore
follows with the greatest interest the various excavations
now being carried out in Israel. Biblical archaeology is to
him important in general, but he especially anticipates that
eventually they will yield metallurgical discoveries impor-
tant to the country.

BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY: Jews in the United States
wishing to learn about the Bible as a major source of
knowledge on ancient Jewish archaeology, should read the
extremely interesting book, "Understanding the Bible
Through History and Archaeology," by Prof. Harry M.
Orlinsky, published by Ktav Publishing House.
This is a scholarly volume written by one of the
world's greatest Biblical scholars in a style that makes its
content absorbing reading for everybody. It is a book which
will, in addition to its scholarly value, contribute greatly
to the strengthening of Jewish identity among the Jewish
academic youth on the campus as well as among many of
their American-born parents who know little or nothing
of the ancient Jewish past.
Dr. Orlinsky, professor of Bible at Hebrew Union
Colldge-Jewish Institute of Religion, is editor-in-chief of
The Torah—the Hebrew Bible translated in contemporary
English, published by the Jewish Publication Society. He
edits the Library of Biblical Studies and served recently as
president of the Society of Biblical Literature. He is revered
by his students as a teacher and admired by all who
know him for his personality.
Space does not permit to fully analyze his fascinating
book. It is sufficient to say that it represents a radical
revaluation of the significance of the Bible. It refutes the
views of Bible critics—including the well-known social
philosopher Bertrand Russell—who say that the Bible
cannot be taken as a reliable basis for the reconstruction
of history. He considers it unfortunate that these scholars
had not kept up with archaeological discoveries of the past
several decades.
Prof. Orlinsky points out that the archaeological dis-
coveries of the past several decades have swung the
pendulum the other way to a considerable extent. The older
views that the Biblical data were suspect and even likely
to be false, unless supported by extra-Biblical facts, had to
give way more and more to the view that, by and large,
the Biblical accounts are more likely to be true than false,
unless clear-cut evidence from sources outside the Bible
demonstrate the reverse. Modern historians, Dr. Orlinsky
emphasizes, have come to accept much of the Biblical data
as constituting unusually reliable historical documents of
antiquity.
In dealing with various aspects of the Bible—including
the relationship of archaeology to the Bible—Prof. Orlinsky
makes it clear in his book what the Bible is and what it is
not. He comes to the conclusion that though it would seem
now that it's possible, at long last, to write a thoroughly
acceptable history of ancient Israel, one which will conform
to the highest standards of modern, scientific historiogra-
phy, the time has not yet come to do it. He explains why.
His "Understanding the Bible Through History and
Archaeology" is one of the greatest contributions to Jewish
knowledge.

survival has been her eco-

The dinner paid tribute to
Gustave L. Levy, former
New York Stock Exchange
chairman and now senior
partner in Goldman, Sachs
and Co., for improving Amer-
ican-Israel trade and for en-
couraging increased financ-
ing of U.S. firms in Israel,

Max Ratner, chamber presi-
dent, presented Levy with the
chamber's "man of the year"
award.

Ambassador David Rivlin,
consul general of Israel, re-
viewed Israel's first 25 years
and noted that her economic
growth and vitality is clearly
shown by the vast and varied
export of goods to various
countries throughout t h e
world. Israel, Rivlin said,
even has the "hutzpa" to ex-
port wine to France.
