Holocaust Victims
Marked on Clock

MINNEAPOLIS—A digital
clock, which will advance
from zero to 6,000,000 in the
course of a year, symboliz-
ing the deaths of Jews in the
Holocaust, has been installed
in the Adat Jeshurun Syna-
gogue here.
The clock, which advances
one number every 5.2 sec-
onds, was conceived by
Jonathan Gross, a computer-
ologist. The metal sculpture
housing the clock was de-
signed by a Minneapolis
artist, Shirley Hanson. The
Hebrew word Zakhor (re-
member) is lettered on the
sculpture.

The message said in part:
"Leo Baeck was one of the
most significant representa-
tives of Judaism in Ger-
many. At the time of great-
est oppression, his dignity
and courage made him a
symbol of the greatness and
strength of Judaism in the
world . . . He was one of the
first to reach out his hand
for the reconciliation between
Jews and Germans."
Britain's prime minister,
Edward Heath, sent a mes-
sage to the organizers of the
centenary observance.
Rabbi Baeck served as
chief rabbi of Berlin through
the early years of the Nazi
era. He was imprisoned at
the Theresienstadt concen-
tration camp and survived
to spend the last years of his
life in London, physically
frail but mentally alert and
vigorous.
Rabbi Baeck's fa mous
book, "The Essence of Juda-
ism," established him as a
major spiritual leader and
one of the prominent thinR-
ers of the 20th Century.

El Al Runs in Black
Despite Problems

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—El Al
is one of the most successful
airlines in the world, oper-
ating at a profit in a time
when most international car-
riers are running in the red.
This is attributed in part
to the loyalty of its clientele.
Of late, however, El Al's
financial picture has de-
clined somewhat because of
the additional outlay of mil-
lions required to protect the
air fleet against sabotage
and terror.
There are other headaches.
According to Davar Has-
havua, an organ of the Hista-
drut, El Al showed an oper-
ating deficit of IL 12,000,000
($3,250,000) for the period
April 1, 1972-Feb. 21, 1973,
traceable to work stoppages
and strikes.
In proportion to its size,
El Al has suffered greater
financial losses from work
stoppages than any other
airline in the world. Never-
theless, El Al expects to wind
up the year in the black.
