30—Friday, May 25, 1973 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Lack of Jewish National Identity Seen as Anti-Semitism Basis BY HEIDI PRESS Speakers, Artists Catalogue to Be Distributed at Program Institute The homelessness of Jews in Europe made them "socio- political cripples," and ulti- mately led to anti-Semitism, according to Dr. Emanuel Taney of the department of psychiatry at Sinai Hospital. Dr. Tanay, responding to a paper on anti-Semitism de- livered Monday at a depart- ment meeting by Dr. Milton J. Steinhardt, also of Sinai said the Jews in Europe be- came hate objects because they were without a country of their own. "The homeless Jew was a perfect target because he lacked a homeland and a na- tional power," Dr. Tanay said. However, "the creation of the state of Israel changes the situation," he said. In Israel, the Jews regained a national power. In the introduction to his paper, entitled, "Masks of Anti-Semitism: Current Per- spectives," Dr. Steinhardt gave his motivation for writ- ing the paper, originally pre- sented in Jerusalem in May 1972. He said the reaction of listing run the range from "Anthropology" to "Zion- ism," suggesting in each in- stance persons qualified to deal with the subject. Mrs. Carl Schiller and Mrs. J. . Dr. Steinhardt noted that Israel seemed to take on the part of the aggressor in the eyes of the New Left. He said that after the Six-Day War, this group adopted a resolution that 'charged Is- rael with 'imitating the Nazis, resorting to terror, force, and massacre.' Ap- parently, the Israelis' victory in the Six-Day War gave psy- chological impetus to erase the guilt feelings generated by the memory of the six million innocent Jewish lives wiped out." Dr. Steinhardt said the basis for anti-Semitism is emotional. He included "Un- conscious feelings of envy, sibling rivalry, parental re- jection, and jealousy of a stubborn minority that re- sists losing its identity." He alluded to Karl Marx, who was the grandson of a rabbi, yet he managed to turn such men as Emerson and James Lowell against the Jews. Referring to the psycholo- logical basis of anti-Semit- ism, Dr. Steinhardt used Marx as an example. He said the "typical Jewish anti-Semite" identifies with the aggressor, "thus deny- ing the painful fact that he is the object of the hostility.
