'Weekend Trip, Saved by Senator, Yields Proceeds for Israel Fund Thanks to the intervention of a state senator from Grosse Pointe, 36 Shaarey Zedek youth members were able to walk their feet off last weekend to benefit the Israel Emergency Fund. The 36 seventh and eighth graders who belong to Kadi- me United Synagogue Youth at Shaarey Zedek were among the 6 to 7,000 partici- pants in a walkathon for Is- ORIN ROSS ORCHESTRA The Finest in Musical Entertainment 545-3393 or 399-2098 rael, in Highland Park, Ill., 1 a suburb of Chicago. Kadima had planned the trip long in advance as part of an "exchange program" with North Suburban Beth El. Youth members of that congregation and of Shaarey Zedek have been visiting each other for weekend events for the past two years. Shaarey Zedek youth had raised some $1,500 for the Israel Emergency Fund by obtaining pledges of at least $2 per mile for the Highland Park 25-mile walkathon. But at the last minute, only a day before they were scheduled to leave Detroit, it looked as though they EXPECTING OUT OF TOWN GUESTS FOR A WEDDING OR A BAR MITIVA? DeLuxe Motor Stages, which had agreed to transport the youngsters and four chap- erons, backed out of the ar- rangment, claiming that it had not received the required deposit on time. Jerry Leeson, assistant di- rector of education and youth at Shaarey Zedek, can't un- derstand how that could be, since he had put a check in the mail the same day the price was quoted to him: May 8. It was the sixth phone call he had made to the company, asking for the figure. On May 15, two days be- fore the group was to leave for Chicago, Lesson received in the mail the same letter he had sent to DeLuxe. Scrawled at the bottom were the words: "Letter came too late." The youth group was thrown into panic. Leeson couldn't find an available bus in the state. But Harry Nel- son, the father of one of the youngsters, found an an- gel. Nelson got on the phone to his friend, State Sen. George S. Fitzgerald of Grosse Pointe. It was now Wednes- day. Sen. Fitzgerald c o n - tacted Greyhound Bus Lines and in 20 minutes had the promise of a bus. It was pulled out of Pitts- burgh, driven through the night to Detroit and, miracle of miracles, was ready and waiting Thursday afternoon when the children boarded. They joined their Chicago friends for the walkathon, and before they had to return home Sunday afternoon had completed 14.3 miles. Two of the Detroit chaperons walked with them, but Kadima mem- ber Jolie Laker did the fast- est time. Homeowners all along the route served refreshments and offered encouragement to the walkers. Leeson said the experience was very satisfying, even if his feet were in disagree- ment. lliss Susan to 11 -cd .1Ir.
