France and Saudi Arabia Agree to Economic, Political Ties
PARIS (JTA)—France and
Saudi Arabia have decided
upon a policy of close polit-
ical and economic coopera-
tion as a result of King Fai-
sal's visit to France, French
official circles said here.
Among the concrete deci-
sions were the sale of French-
made Mirage jets, helicop-
ters, missiles and tanks to
the Saudi Arabian forces,
which reportedly are beef-
ing up their hardware as a
result of the Saudi-Iranian
crisis.
Minister of Defense Robert
Galley is due to visit Saudi
Arabia next fall to negotiate
the actual sale contracts,
while Saudi military missions
are to visit France this sum-
mer to inspect and test the
French arms.
Diplomatic observers here
believe that the Franco-
"i agreement will affect
I _ ace's over-all relations
with the Arab world.
At the same time Israeli
Ambassador Asher Ben Na-
tan met with French Foreign
Minister Michel Jobert. It
was their first meeting since
Jobert replaced Maurice
Schumann as foreign min-
ister.
Israeli sources in Paris de-
scribed the 50-minute meet-
ang as a "courtesy call" and
said "it was frank and cor-
dial." They refused to say
whether the ambassador
raised the issue of the Libyan
Mirage jets in Egypt.
Jobert, sources said, sug-
gested that the two countries
"let bygones be bygones"
and "strive to develop nor-
mal and balanced ties." The
minister , these sources
added, made no concrete
suggestions on how to reach
this aim.
On the same day, Jobert
met with Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat's special em-
issary, Hafez Ismail.
The Egyptian diplomat
pressed France, sources said,
to help mobilize West Euro-
pean diplomatic pressure in
favor Of a political solution
to the Middle East conflict.
He said, as he was leaving
the Elysee Place, that his
trip to Paris was only the
first of a series of visits to
Western capitals. He praised
the French government for
its continued firm attitude in
the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Knesset Candidacy
TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Ezer
Weizman, former command-

e. Ct to be a candidate for
election to the Knesset this
year on the Gahal list, "un-
less there will be basic
changes in the Herut Party."
He was dubious that any
such changes would occur
and was therefore of the
opinion that he would not be
standing for election nor will
he take any part in the elec-
tion campaign.
Gen. Weizman's decision is
a direct outcome of the dif-
ferences that developed be-
tween him and Gahal leader,
Menahem Begin that emerg-
ed during the national con-
vention of the Herut Party.

Prominent French leftists
joined some 5,000 Arabs and
other demonstrators recently
in protest against "Zionism
and Arab reaction."
Leftist leaders Alain Kri-
vine and Alain Geismar, both
Jews, led the march from
the Place de Bastille to the
Pere Lachaise Cemetery
where the French represent-
ative of the Palestine Liber-
ation Organization, Mahmoud
el Hamshari, is buried. He
died last January of wounds
he suffered when a bomb ex-
ploded in his home.
Hamshari's widow was
also in the line of march
which passed through a Jew-
ish quarter. There were no
clashes or incidents between
the residents and the march-
ers, who carried Palestinian
flags and huge photos of
Hamshari.
Another manifestation of
concern for the Middle East
was a quarter-page adver-
tisement in Le Monde calling
for the return of the Pales-
tinian ref u g e e s "to their
homeland from which they
were chased." The ad was
signed by 85 French intellec-
tuals, including the philos-
opher, Jean Paul Sarte.
