Leonard Woodcock, Irving
Bluestone and many others
figure in this important_re-
portorial account.
Rabbi Morris Adler, Mey-
er L. Prentis, Maurice Sugar
and others who played their
roles in this union-industry
negotiations are referred to
here.
There is the interesting
story of Walter and Victor
Reuther bicycling through
Germany in 1933. Serrin re-
ports: "They traveled in 10
European countries in 11
months. They bicycled in
Berlin, arriving the day after
the Reichstag fire. One day,
Reuther later said, he was
caught in a crowd and push-
ed against a Mercedes-Benz
carrying Adolf Hitler 'I often
thought I should have had
more than a camera,' Reu-
ther said."
Scores of other most in-
teresting stories are related
in this impressive book.
"The Company and the
Union" is a valuable chapter
in the story of labor rela-
tions, and in ,Detroit's his-
tory.

Prominent personalities in
the labor movement and the
major events that marked
negotiations with manage-
ment in the automobile in-
dustry are recorded by Wil-
liam Serrin in "The Company
and the Union" (Knopf).
The author, a Free Press
staff member, was one of the
group of reporters who re-
ceived the Pulitzer Prize for
their coverage of the Detroit
riots in 1967.
"The Company and the
Union," is the inside story of
the "civilized relationship"
between General Motors and
the Unit ed Automobile
Workers. The book reveals
the transformation in recent
years of a natural antagon-
ism into a socially destruct-
ive partnership—as drama-
tized by the GM strike of
1970, the most expensive
work stoppage in U.S. his-
tory. Its startling conclusions
will be especially pertinent
during this year of negotia-
tion, as GM and the union
move toward contract re-
newal next fall.
Serrin demonstrates that
the leaders of both GM and
the UAW are partners in a
self-serving charade — ex-
cluding from their dealings
