Stretched to Year

The Detroit Round Table

the year, with informal teas
of 5 to 15 members held at
members' homes and larger
groups at institutions.
The guests may be neigh-
bors of different religions, or
from neighboring communi-
ties, whose goal is to instill
a feeling of fellowship, un-
derstanding and a willing-
ness to lend a helping hand.
The new concept, "Sister-
hood and Brotherhood 365
days a year," started Thurs-
day with a tea honoring
hostesses of past teas at the
Detroit Round Table head-
quarters.
Mrs. Leonard Gusow is
over-all chairman of the teas,

Schoenbrun
Thanks Hias for
Wife, Son-in-law

NEW YORK — A two-fold
debt to Hias (Hebrew Immi-
grant Aid Society) was
acknowledged Tuesday by
David Schoenbrun, CBS news
correspondent, commentator
and lecturer.
"One," he explained, "is
for the gift of a beautiful
and devoted wife and the
other for a wonderful son-in-
law who, in addition to
making my daughter happy,
is a member of our family
team of writers." He ad-
dressed the women's division
of United Hias Service at its
annual luncheon at the Plaza
Hotel.
At the turn of the century,
he said, a young boy fled
Poland with a group of
friends and came to Amster-
dam, only to be thrown into
prison. A representative of
Hias prevailed upon the
authorities to release him
rather than send him back
to Poland. Hias helped him
come to America where he
married, raised a family 'and
gave his daughter Dorothy
in marriage to Schoenbrun.
Now retired, Dr. I. L. Scher
was a prominent dental sur-
geon specializing in jaw re-
habilitation.
The second escape invol-
ving his family, Schoenbrun
continued, occurred in 1964
when young Robert Szekely
succeeding in crossing the
Hungarian border and made
his way to Vienna. Again
Hias was on the job. Robert
came to America, met Lucy
Schoenbrun and married her.
The Szekelys are co-authors
with Schoenbrun of a re-
cently published book, "The
New Israelis."
Schoenbrun received the
Hias Women's Division Man
of the Year Award in recog-
nition of his continuous ef-
forts to acquaint the public
with the problems and needs
of Jewish refugees seeking
to build new lives in freedom
and security.
