Meanwhile the Hamburg
public prosecutor demanded
that former SS-Rottenfuehrer
Thomas Wippenbeck, 65, be
sentenced to 41/2 years in
prison for complicity in the
murder of numerous Jews in
Warsaw during the Nazi oc-
cupation.

Because of conflicting evi-
dence, the public prosecutor
dropped charges that Wip-
penbeck had personally hang-
ed, shot or tortured Jews to
death.
Last week he demanded
life imprisonment for Dr.
Ludwig Hahn, 65, accused of
47 murders and one attempt-
ed murder in the Warsaw
Ghetto. The court verdicts
are expected June 5.
Bail was denied Mrs. Her-
mine Braunsteiner Ryan, the
Queens housewife fighting,
extradition to West Ger-
many, where she faces
charges of murdering Nazi
concentration camp inmates
while she was a guard.

Highway Hides
Aged Cemetery

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
Jerusalem Municipality clos-
ed down part of one lane on
tthe Jerusalem-Jericho high-
way after the discovery of an
ancient Jewish cemetery near
the cemetery on the Mount
of Olives.
The lane was closed to pro-
tect workers employed by the
religious affairs ministry who
are digging on the site to
uncover additional graves.
Mayor Teddy Kollek said
the excavators didn't have a
proper license and complain-
ed that their digging was in-
terfering with traffic along
I the road.
He agreed to shut down
the lane after he was request-
ed by Mordehai Surkiss,
chairman of the Knesset In-
terior Committee to permit
further work on the site.
