LI. 8-41 19 DON'T MAKE A COSTLY MISTAKE CALL US LAST Life in Ashes of Auschwitz In Poland, "if you want to encounter Polish Jewry, you have to do it in cemeteries," said Leonard Fein at the closing program of the an- nual cultural series of the Flint Jewish Community Council. Nevertheless, said the Brandeis University pro- fessor of politics and social policy, he came to realize at the site of Auschwitz, that "I was not only standing in the valley of the shadow of death, but also beginning to understand what climbing the mountain of life is all about." Dr. Fein was one of 35 American Jews, led by Michael Pelavin of Flint, national chairman of the Young Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal, who took part in the trip to Poland. Israel and Judaism, said Dr. Fein, are proving vic• torious over the forces of evil that Nazism represent- ed. At the same time "Nazis and Nazism have to be de- feated every day." He is encouraged by the fact, he said, that more Jews are studying Hebrew in col- lege and that throughout the country Jews are beginning to assert their Jewishness. He recalled that in the guest book in the Auschwitz museum — where there are exhibits of hair of murdered Jews and a display case of pacifiers of babies killed there — Fein wrote for the group: "Despite everything, the people of Israel live and will live forever." uder's Scotch 100% Blended Scotch Whiskies, Imported By Gooderham & Worts, Ltd., Detroit, Mich.
