Rep. Cederberg Pledges Help
in Russian Jews' Emigration

Congressman Elford "Al"
Cederberg of Michigan's 10th
District this week indicated
a deep interest in efforts to
assure Russian Jews' right
to emigrate, although he is
not a co-sponsor of the Van-

ik Amendment that corres-
ponds in the House of Rep-
resentatives to the Jackson

Amendment in the Senate.
In a statement to The Jew-
ish News, Rep. Cederberg
declared that "it is inaccur-
ate to assume that I do not
support, in principle, the ob-
jectives of the proposal."
He stated that when the
House Ways and Means Com-
mittee meets to consider
tariff and trade legislation
"the entire question will be
reviewed." He states in his
explanatory note:
"I have, on numerous oc-
casions, expressed to the So-
viet government and its of-
ficials my concern regarding

their treatment of citizens of
Jewish background who wish
to emigrate. I have, further,
joined my colleagues in the
Congress in expressing to
the President my desire that
he take advantage of those
opportunities which might
arise to bring his and the
United States' concern re-
garding Russian emigration
policy to the attention of So-
viet leaders. I feel that sup-
port of private and public
efforts with respect to this
problem is appropriate, and
I shall continue to do what
I can to be helpful.

"The Ways and Means Com-
mittee of the House of Rep-
resentatives, of which Rep.

Vanik is a member, will, I
am sure, give serious atten-
tion to the final language of
trade restrictions. I can as-
sure you that I am going to
look at the final version very
carefully."
