raised a furor in Orthodox
circles which felt that the
youths were justified in
bombing an establishment
they considered to be pro-
faning the city.

Shazar, who issued his
pardon for Brand on the eve
of Passover, had made no
effort to conceal his sym-
pathy for the two youths.

Last Y o m Kippur he
publicly expressed his wish
to fast in jail with the pair.
The president's pardon for
the convicted bomb throwers
was reportedly influenced by
the Lubavitcher Rebbe in
New York with whom Shazar
maintains close relations.
