F THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, April 20, 1973-43 OBITUARIES Rose Himelhoch, Noted Educator Rose Phillips Himelhoch, former educator and vice president of Himelhoch Bros. and Co., died April 13 at age 88. Mrs. Himelhoch, a noted educator in the Detroit school system in the 1920s and 1930s, along with Dr. Charles L. Spain devised the platoon system for elementary edu- cation. The system, now used Americans Offered Rent-Control Housing nationwide, allowed teachers to specialize in their specific fields. Each child would have several teachers instead of one teacher for all subjects. She was principal of the Maybee School in 1918 when it became the first platoon school in the U. S. In 1934, she married Israel Himelhoch, owner of the women's clothing store chain. She resigned from the school system four years later to become vice president of personnel of her husband's company. Mrs. Himelhoch was active with the Detroit Symphony and Children's Hospital, and was a member of National Council of Jewish Women, Temple Beth El and the Women's City Club. She is survived by her husband, Israel; two step- sons, Charles, president of Himelhoch's, and Jerome, professor of sociology at the University of Missouri at St. Louis; nieces, nephews and great-grandnieces and great- gra ndnephews.
