Two major compositions
will be premiered, one writ-
ten for this occasion by 16-
year-old Maxwell Raimi,
titled "Return," and a sec-
ond, "Yerushalayim" by the
Canadian composer Ben
Steinberg. Both works, dedi-
cated to the 25th anniversary,
will be presented by the John
Dovaras Singers, under the
direction of its founder, John
Dovaras. Also included will
be Julius Chajes' "Hymn of
Freedom."
A series of Israeli com-
positions will be sung by the
soloists, with orchestral ac-
companiment, and Miss Cole
and Cantors Barkin and Or-
bach will sing from a Yid-
dish opera by Joel Engel.

missioned by composer Shos-
takovitch to translate into
English his 13th Symphony.
Prof. Marshall has made fre-
quent return visits to Russia.
Although his Soviet-Jewish
artist display will not be for
sale at the Shaarey Zedek
show, there will be a large
exhibit of Israeli arts and
crafts from the Yarkon Gal-
lery. These items, totaling
about 150 pieces, will range
in price from $1 to $350.
Included in the art show
and sale will be paintings,
sculptures and art books
from several local art gal-
leries, artists and book
stores.
Chairman of Shaarey Ze-
dek's fine arts group is Dr.
Harold Daitch. Co-chairman
is Milford Nemer.

Prof. Herbert Marshall,
translator, author, editor and
theater and art enthusiast,
will exhibit his collection of
47 pieces of art by living
Soviet Jewish artists — the
first Detroit area showing of
their works.
"Jewish Artists and the
Arts in the Soviet Union" will
be the topic of Prof. Mar-
shall's talk 8 p.m. April 29
at the synagogue. The public
is invited at no charge.

Prof. Marshall, professor
of performing arts at South-
ern Illinois University and
director of its Center for
Soviet and East European
Studies, lived, studied and
worked in the Soviet Union
from 1930 to 1937 and is an
authorized translator of many
Soviet writers. He directed
Soviet plays in English in
England and produced Yid-
dish plays in London's East
End, becoming a director of
the Old Vic.

sity of Illinois—are among
the 19 campus ministers who
have been chosen by the
Danforth Foundation of St.
Louis as recipients of Under-
wood Fellowships for 1973-74.

The Birmingham Temple
will hold a joint service with
the Farmington Unitarian-
Universalist Church 8:30
p.m. today at the temple.
The service will commem-
orate the Warsaw Ghetto
Uprising and the Easter Re-
bellion with dramatic 'read-
ings by Rabbi Sherwin T.
Wine and Joan Neff. Richard
Neff, minister, will partici-
pate.

Adas Shalom Synagogue is
sending "Passover Care
Packages" to its college stu-
dents living away from home.
The package contains a few
representative P a s s over
foods, a letter from the rab-
bis of 'Adas Shalom, instruc-
tions on keeping kosher for
Passover and a Hagada. The
food items are not intended
to supply a student with nec-
essities for the entire week,
