Israel's Staff of Life-Felafel-Up
as Panthers Roll Back Prices
THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
price of falafel on pita, the
Israeli equivalent of a hot
dog on a roll, rose 20 per
cent.
Vendors who sell falafel on
steet corners all over the
country said the increase
was due to the high price of
flour and cooking oil recently
set by the government.
The vegeables, spices and
other items that go to make
falafel were not raised in
price by the government but
have gone up anyway, angry
customers were told.
Meanwhile, 18 Black Pan-
thers protesting the recent
'e rises were arrested
r they took over a super-
market in the Kiryat Yovel
suburb and started selling
items at 20 per cent below
the marked prices.
Police Deputy Commander
Avraham Turjeman told JTA
that the Panthers would be
char ged with illegal as-
sembly.
He said the police intended
to press the charges even
though the invasion was, in
Turjeman's words, a "stunt."
He claimed it could have led
to a serious breach of the
peace.

When police arrived, some
Panthers were picketing out-
side the supermarket while
those inside vs,ere busily
stamping lower prices on
items from the shelves and
checking out delighted cus-
tomers at the checkout count-
ers.
The commerce ministry
said that it was beefing up
its force of inspectors to see
to it that shopkeepers do not
increase prices above the
new high ceilings set by the
government.
A ministry spokesman told
the JTA that so far only a
handful of violators have
been caught and that legal
action has been taken against
them.
