Victor Shemtov reported in
the Knesset "that the present
number of 8,442 medical doc-
tors in the country does not
constitute a surplus of medi-
cal manpower. At least 30
per cent of all the medical
doctors are at or beyond the
age of retirement."
The JAMA added: "The
population is constantly grow-
ing and forcing expansion of

AMA Reports on Diabetes

, Studies conducted in Israel
to detect incidence of diabetes
have shown that Yemenite
Jews have a decreased glu-
cose tolerance.
The Journal of the Ameri-
can Medical Association re-
ports in its current issue:
"Israeli physicians have
long noticed that a consider-
able percentage of Yemenite
Jews have a decreased glu-
cose tolerance. These Yeme-
nites have migrated in in-
creasing numbers to Israel
during the past 20 years.
"Because of their long cul-
tural isolation, the Yeme-
nite Jews offer researchers
a rare opportunity to com-
pare effects of altered diet
and other living habits with
the incidence of diabetes.
"An experimental tech-
nique for detecting diabetes
is being put to work in Israel
to help physicians diagnose
diabetes among these immi-
grant Yemenite Jews.
"The project is supported
by the National Institutes of
Health, specifically by the
National Institute of Arthri-
tis, Metabolism, and Diges-
tive Diseases.
"The team of scientists col-
laborating on this project
consists of physicians in the
United States who are led by
Marvin D. Siperstein, MD,
of the University of Texas
Health Science Center at Dal-
las; the physicians' team in
Israel is led by Dr. David
Rabin, MD, of the Hadassah
Medical Organization in Jeru-
salem."
