MOSES ROSEN
BUCHAREST (JTA) - Dr.
Moses Rosen, chief rabbi of
Romani a, was re-elected
president of the Federation
of Jewish communities in
Romania at its annual
ference here over the
end.
Dr. Rosen, who heads a
15-member council elected
by the federation, declared
in his keynote address that
"The experience of the Jew-
ish community in Romania,
which maintained its reli-
gious, cultural and national
identity, shows that there
was no contradiction between
a. socialist society and a rec-
ognizable Jewish existence."
He added that reports pre-
sented at the conference by
representatives of 57 Roman-
ian Jewish communities indi-
cated that Romanian Jews
were well organized.
There are 68 organized
Jewish communities and
smaller groups in 27 other
towns.
Romanian Jews are served
by 153 synagogues, 24 Jewish
schools or Hebrew courses,
19 ritual baths, and nine
kosher restaurants. The com-
munity publishes a fortnight-
ly journal in Romanian, Yid-
dish and Hebrew, the "Re-
vista Cultului Mozaic" and
an annual almanac contain-
ing a Jewish calendar and
other information which has
a circulation of 16,000.
The social assistance pro-
gram for Romanian Jewry,
which is run with the help
of the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee, has
aided about 10,000 Jews since
1967, it was reported at the
conference.
The assistance includes
medical and dental care,
which employs 30 physicians
and dentists and the main-
tenance of six old-age homes,
four in Bucharest.
Israel Bars Hussein
Interview for TV
JERUSALEM (JTA) - An
Israeli television correspond-
ent who was granted an inter-
view by King Hussein of Jor-
dan, has been barred by Is-
raeli authorities from
. er-
taking the assignment.
Eddie Sofer reportedly had
been making approaches to
Jordanian authorities for the
past six months. King
Hussein finally agreed to re-
ceive him at the Royal Pal-
ace in Amman on the under-
standing that the king would
discuss his proposed plan for
the federation of the West
Bank with Jordan.
At the last minute, the Is-
raeli government intervened
on grounds that the interview
was not necessary.
