Israel Hasn't
Abandoned
Shakespeare

In his column "On the
Town" in the N. Y. Daily
News, Charles McHarry
wrote:
"It sounds like heresy but
Israel's education ministry
has decided to eliminate
Shakespeare from its high
school curriculum. Writers
such as Shaw and Beckett
and even Arthur Miller will
be emphasized instead."
To which Midwest Consul
for Press and Information
Arie Haskel replied in an ex-
planatory note to The Jewish
News:
"Shakespeare has not been
dropped from the Israeli high
school curriculum but has
been toppled from its exag-
geratedly dominant position
there. Until now we had the
rather absurd situation of
youngsters who were unable
to speak colloquial English
having to grasp the intricacies
of the Bard."

Chaim Vinitsky Send Holiday
Greetings to U. S. Friends

Hundreds — perhaps thous-
ands — of American Jews
have been befriended on their
visits in Israel by Chaim Vin-
itsky of the Jerusalem Sokh-
nut office—the Jewish Agency
tourist department.
On the occasion of Israel's
25th anniversary, Vinitsky
sends this message to scores
of his Detroit riends through
The Detroit Jewish News:
"Through my work with
the United Jewish Appeal —
I was fortunate to met thou-
sands and thousands of dedi-
cated warm people, who
came as friends of the UJA.
"Each one different from
the other and from different
communities, but all united
in their feelings of love in
your whole-hearted identifi-
cation with the people of Is-
rael and your profound con-
cern for our needs. You were
the first ones to help little
Israel in its stages of its
establishment, and in a vast
way, responsible to bring in
the many many thousands of
immigrants and also help
them getting settled as honor-
able citizens of our country,
which they can call their
own, and be part of its
society.
"Those were very trying
and difficult days — days full
of worry, anxiety, expecta-
tions and hope for a better
future. Only patience and en-
durance helped us overcome

our many many difficulties
we encountered. Naturally all
this could not have been ac-
complished without your tre-
mendous support—financially
and even more so — morally.
"To all those wonderful
couples, and those who fol-
lowed them in later years, I
take pleasure in expressing
my little thank you, and wish
to send my heartiest good
wishes for 25 years of inde-
pendence, and ask — where
are you? Your place is with
us right now, to drink a Toast
and celebrate with us — our
First Jubilee.
"You who were the first
ones to come here, and share
with us our most trying days,
We Salute you, my dear
friends. You belong here just
now to share with us and
celebrate together the fruits
of our toil."
