The network said the de- cision to drop "Bridget Loves Bernie" from its Saturday night prime-time slot was "absolutely removed, inde- pendent a n d disassociated from criticism of the show from some Jewish groups." Robert D. Wood, president of CBS, said that criticism of the show "had been limited to a very small, though ar- ticulate group" and that it had received fewer than 200 letters of complaint, compar- ed with 6,000 letters from viewers who protested abor- tion episodes on another CBS- TV program. The program had been at- tacked by several groups as being offensive to Judaism because its plot focuses on the marriage of a Jew and a Christian. In Dayton, a Reform Rabbi suggested that Jewish organ- izations over - reacted to "Bridget Loves Bernie," as- serting that the issue "has aroused the fiercest assault of rhetoric I can remember," almost equalling, "in emo- tional intensity, the denunci- ations of Arab propaganda against Israel." Rabbi Howard R. Green- stein of Temple Israel said that he might be less "trau- matized" than many of his colleagues "because I am ready to concede that 'Brid- get Loves Bernie' is not a totally unfounded fairy tale." He said "not all mixed mar- riages are miserable failures. In fact some work out quite well, to the astonishment of many rabbis and in-laws." He added that he is totally opposed to the principle of mixed marriage. • • The Jewish Center Hebrew • • department will present Is- • • ARTISTIC UPHOLSTERERS • BRINGS YOU MORE • • EXPERIENCE AND • EXPERTISE IN THE • • UPHOLSTERERY FIELD 1 ; THAN ANY OTHER SHOP • • • • A VISIT TO ARTISTIC • UPHOLSTERERS WILL ▪ • CONVINCE YOU . . .
