Reporting that the women's division of the Allied Jew-

Yeshiva University Museum, Newestin NYC, to Open on Sunday

NEW YORK — The city's
newest cultural attraction,
the Yeshiva University Mu-
seum, will open to the public
Sunday, it was announced by
Dr. Samuel Belkin, president.
The museum, endowed by
Erica and Ludwig Jesselson,
is located at the university's
main center in Manhattan's
Washington Heights and is
devoted to Jewish art, arch-
itecture and history.
To be open initially three
days a week, Sundays, Tues-
days and Thursdays from 11
a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the mu-
seum traces Jewish art and
history from the 3rd Century
to modern times.
On permanent display is
the exhibit "Synagogues
Through the Centuries," fea-
turing nine meticulously-
crafted scale model syna-
gogues, er...”Aed especially
for the museum and the fres-
coes of Dura-En...ropos, the
! . .rd Century synagogue in
Syria. recreated especially
for thc, museum in half-scale.
Of special interest is the
Torah Scroll of the Baal
Shem Tov (Besht), founder
of Hasidism. It is :made of
thick, primitive parchment
and, according to tradition,
was written for the Besht,
who owned and used it. A
lumber of distinctive entries
and forms of script in the
scroll are believed to have
been made by the Besht him-
self.
Among the many displays
are the rare books from Yes-
hiva University's and private
collections.
There are also stylistically
significant Torah crowns, fin-
ials and headpieces, Sabbath

kidush cups, incense boxes
and lamps for synagogue
"eternal Eames."
An unusual feature is a
wall-size, electrified, analytic
map, which chronicles the
historic migration of Jewish

communities from the time of
Abraham to the 20th Century.
The first special holiday
exhibit, April 8-June 4, is en-
titled, "From Passover to
Shavuot." Included are rare
Hagadot, among them the

earliest printed Hagada,
known as the Prague Haga-
da (16th Century) and Pass-
over ceremonial utensils, din-
nerware and items for the
baking and decoration of
matzo.
