Poland Accused of Falsifying Role of Jews in WarsairGhetto

LONDON (JTA)—The As-
sociation of Polish Jews in
Great Britain accused the
Polish government Tuesday
of trying to falsify history
with regard to the Warsaw
Ghetto Uprising and other
Jewish acts of resistance
against the Nazis.

A statement issued by Da-
vid Kupferman, acting chair-
man of the group, and Ed-
ward S. Madames, its hon-
orary secretary, claimed that
the Polish authorities "are
deliberately misrepresenting
the events of that era, and
especially the events relating

to Jewish resistance."
They said that "pressure
has been brought to bear
upon the Jewish Historical
Institute in Poland to pre-
sent the revolt in the War-
saw Ghetto not as a heroic
act of the Jews of the ghetto
but merely as an episode
within Polish resistance to
German occupation."
The statement said that
pressure was exerted on in-
dividual Jews as well as on
Jewish bodies invited to at-
tend a symposium of Jewish
scholars in Warsaw.
"This symposium is being
officially organized by the
Jewish Historical Institute,
which has of late been forced
to become an instrument of
official Polish propaganda.
This falsifying of Jewish
history started under Gomul-
ka and is being practiced
with greater intensity by his
successors," the statement
said.
Meanwhile, Count Edward
Raczynski, the wartime Pol-
ish ambassador to Britain,
has taken sharp issue with
an author who claimed in a
recently published book that
"Polish anti-Semitism was
almost as 'virulent as wat
the German brand."
The book, "The Vatican in
the Age of the Dictators,"
by Anthony Rhodes, deals
mainly with Pope Pius XII.
In a letter published in the
Times Tuesday, Count Ra-
czynski claimed that Rhodes
told half truths with regard
to Poland's attitude toward
the Jews.
"It is a fact that thanks to
the tolerance my country has
shown since the Middle Ages,
Poland became a place of
refuge for tte Jews perse-
cuted in Western Europe,
England included, and as a
result, Poland's Jewish citi-
zens in the year preceding
the outbreak of the last war
numbered over 3,000,000 and
formed about 10 per cent of
the country's total popula-
tion," the former envoy
wrote.
He conceded that "Poland
had anti-Semitic elements
but this was by no means uni-

MK Leaves NRP
for 1-Man Faction

JERUSALEM (JTA) —Dr.
Avner Sciaky, a National Re-
ligious Party MK, announced
Monday that he was leaving
the NRP to form his own
one-man Knesset faction.
Sciaky, a Sephardic intel-
lectual and law lecturer at
Tel Aviv University, has
been at loggerheads with the
NRP since July when he
voted with Herut and Aguda
factions against the govern-
ment on the "Who Is A Jew"
issue.
The rest of NRP maintain-
ed coalition discipline and
abstained in the Knesset
vote. Sciaky resigned his
post as Deputy Education
Minister at the time.
, Sciaky explained that he
could not reconcile his con-
science with the fact that the
NRP was in effect agreeing
not to amend the Law of
Return to define a Jew as a
person born of a Jewish
mother or converted accord.
ing to Halakha.
Sciaky told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that he
was writing a book on the
"Who Is A Jew" issue in
which he said he would de-
tail the Halakhic and legal
aspects of the problem.

versal, and the Jews exerted
a considerable influence not
only in business but also in
parliament and in the press."
Count Raczynski claimed
that "News about massacres
of Jews in Nazi extermina-
tion camps on Polish soil
reached London not thanks
to the indiscretion of the
German Wehrmacht but
through Polish emissaries,
and it was the Polish govern-
ment in London which gave
it the maximum publicity."
He added: "I myself spoke
on many occasions on public
platforms' aboutthese crimes.
In Nazi - occupied Poland,
massacres of our own kith
and kin matched the massa-
cres of Jews. Although the
sheltering of Jews was pun-
ished by death, such acts of
courage and generosity were
common all over the coun-

try

Count Raczynski said that
thanks to these acts and oth-
ers by the Polish under-
ground, about 80,000 Jews
were able to survive in
Poland.
