French Police Check Channel
Ferries After Terrorist Threat
PARIS (JTA) — French
police began an intensive se-
curity watch on all ferries
crossing the English Chan-
nel Sunday.
Police sources said that
Palestinian terrorists h a d
threatened to blow up the
vessels in reprisal for the ar-
rest and expulsion from
France of Dr. Diane Camp-
bell-Lefevre, a South African'
physician who admitted un-
der questioning by French
police that she belonged to
the Black September terror-
ist organization.
Police sources said that the
Black September threats
were being checked but that
"in the meantime we are
taking no risks." All depart-
ing cross-channel ships, hov-
ercraft and ferries were be-
ing thoroughly checked along
with passengers and cars.
Dr. Campbell-Lefevre, 31,
and her Palestinian compan-
ion, 27-year-old Jamil Abdel
Hakim, were brought before
the French State Security
Court by police who said the
doctor had committed no
crime with which she can be
charged in France. Intent
to commit a crime is not an
offense under French law.
The Palestinian could only
be charged with using forged
travel documents and ille-
gal entry into France.
Dr. Campbell-Lefevre left
for Beirut in 1971 after she
obtained her medical degree
at Cape Town University.
In Lebanon, where she work-
ed in refugee camps, she be-
came interested in the Pal-
estinian cause and helped
El Fatah and other extremist
organizations, it was report-
ed.
French police believe that
the young South African doc-
tor acted as the Black Sep-
tember local liaison agent
in France. They believe she
was in charge of securing
accommodations, money and
travel documents for Black
Septembrists.
It was reported in London
that Dr. Campbell-Lefevre
has been known for some
time to the Special Branch
at Scotland Yard because of
her association with the Pal-
estinian movement.
Meanwhile, the danger of
Arab terrorists attacks in
West Germany has increased,
with particularly endangered
targets including Israeli in-
stallations, airlines offices,
the Jordanian Embassy and
oil concerns, • West German
security services reported.
They said t,h e y had re-
ceived numerous alerts re-
cently from Western intelli-
gence agencies, according to
which Black September com-
mandos are at present in
Western Europe trying to
gain entry into West Ger-
many.
