Leading Israeli Writer, Novelist Haim Hazaz; Wrote of Yemenites JERUSALEM ( J T A) - Haim Hazaz, one of Israel's leading writers, died March 24 at age 74. Mr. Hazaz, who was born in the Ukrainian town of Siderovici, wrote stories about the effect of the Rus- sian revolution on Jews dur- ing the early part of his career. He fled Russia after the Hillel Landsman, 76; Defender of Tel Hai TEL AVIV (JTA)-Hillel Landsman, one of the last survivors of the defense of Tel Hai, died March 21 at the age of 76. He came to Pal- e at the turn of the cen- t joined the Turkish Ar y and served in it as an officer during World War I. Shortly after the war he join- ed Joseph Trumpfeldor in the defense of Tel Hai, a tiny Jewish settlement in Upper Galilee beseiged by thou- sands of Arabs. Trumpfeldor was mortally wounded and died in Lands- man's arms after saying the words that have since become a legend in Israel: "It is good to give your life for your country." Mr. Landsman was among the founders of Ayelet Ha- shahar, a settlement on what OBITUARIES Bolshevik revolution and set- tled in Palestine in 1931 after living in Paris and Berlin. One of the founders of the Land of Israel Movement which came into being imme- diately after the Six-Day War, he was a former presi- dent of the Hebrew Writers Association. His first novel after set- tling in Palestine, "Rehayim Shvoorim" (Broken Mill- stone) earned him the 1942 Bialik Prize. He won the Bialik Prize again in 1971 for a collection of stories. Mr. Hazaz wrote a great deal about Yemenite Jews in 1944 under the title "Hay- oshevet Beganim." Between 1947 and 1952 he published a four-volume epic on Yemenite Jewry, "Yaish," which won him the Israel Prize in 1952. Mr. Hazaz was formerly married to the poet Yocheved Bat Miriam with whom he had a son. Nahum, who was killed in the May 1948 battle for Jerusalem.
