Ouster of Tel Aviv U.
Prof !Not Political'
TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
administration of Tel Aviv
University has denied that
the dismissal of Res. Col.
Meir Payil, a senior lecturer
on military history, had any-
thing to do with his leftist
views.
Col. Payil was advised by
letter that his contract with
the university will not be re-
newed for the next academic
year.
The military scholar - was
regarded as close to the
"Movement for Peace and
Security," a group which its
critics charge advocates
peace at any price with the
Arabs.
The rector, Prof. Simonson,
said the decision to termin-
ate Col. Payil's tenure was.
based on a confidential eval-
uation of his work and on the
determination that military
history studies did not war-
rant a full-time job.

Ohio Rabbis Differ on Intermarriage

COLUMBUS, 0. (JTA) —
Two Columbus rabbis, one
Orthodox and one Reform,
have flatly contradicted each
other on whether the child.
ren of mixed marriages are
raised as Jews.
Reform Rabbi Edward
Kiner, described in the Ohio
Jewish Chronicle as per-
forming eight to 10 such
marriages in Columbus an - -
nually, asserted that vir-
tually all such couples at
whose marriages he- has of-
ficiated, whether there is a
conversion or not, do raise
the children to be Jews.
The rabbis expressed their
views in separate interviews.
Hasidi Rabbi Jeff Siegel
contended that children of
such marriages often are not
being raised. as Jews.
Meanwhile, in a letter to
t h e Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, Prof. Moshe Davis
of the Hebrew University-
Institute of Contemporary
Jewry, clarified his remarks
on inter-marriage made at a
seminar session of the Bnai
Brith's board of governors
meeting in Tel Aviv.
"In intermarriage, one of
the partners adopts the faith
of the other before marriage
in the attempt to achieve a
religious unity in the family.

This is not so in the case of
mixed marriage in which
both partners continue in
their respective faiths and
do pot regard thgieiti . 1.4s:;„,
differences as a - basic ob-
stacle to the totality of their
marriage aspirations," he
said.
Prof. Davis noted that his
remark that Jewish family
life can be maintained and
perpetuated even in mixed
families `refers only to those
cases where religion and
family unity prevails.
