Lubavitcher Claims
Jesus Cults Succeed
JOHANNESBURG (JTA)—
An emissary of the Lubavich-
er Hasidim visiting here has
claimed that various Jesus
cults are making many con-
verts among young Jews and
blamed their parents for fail-
ing to impart "Jewish spirit-
ual values to their children."
Rabbi Mendel Lipskar said
in an interview published
in the Jewish Herald that
"the spectrum of Jews swit-
ching to the Church is amaz-
ing."
He said most of the pur-
ported converts "have some
kind of traditional Jewish
background, some even come
from Jewish day schools.
"There is a total lack of
communication in the way
of thinking between the
adults and the youth . . . If
one can't find true convic-
tion in one's own religion,
one turns elsewhere," he
said.
He claimed that if a Torah
approach was presented as
something honest and valid
and not simply as tradition,
the youth will accept it.

Israel Foreign Cash
Reserves Increase
TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Israel's
foreign currency reserves in-
creased by $93,000,000 in
February and now stand at
$1,189,000,000.
The February rise was a
result of the devaluation of
the American dollar. Israel's
foreign currency reserves are
held in German marks and
Swiss francs.

Rear Adm. Francis L. Gar=
rett, chief of chaplains of
the U.S. Navy, as saying "I

Want . . . to allay any con-
cern in the Jewish commu-
nity that Key 73 . . . would
be used by chaplains to eith-
er proselyte those of another
faith, or to reflect in any way
on them."
Cohen wrote Kanter, who
holds a reserve commission
in the Navy Chaplain Corps,
that the purpose of Key 73
"is completely at odds with
the proper function of the
Navy chaplaincy." That
stated purpose is "to share
with every person in North
America 'more fully and
more forcefully the claims
and message of the Gospel
of Jesus Christ, to confront
people with the Gospel of
Jesus Christ by proclama-
tion and demonstration, by
witness and ministry, by
word and deed."
The sole function of the
chaplaincy corps, said Co-
hen, "is to supply the spir-
itual needs of those Ameri-
can citizens who are serving
in the armed forces.

Defense of Chaplaincy on Key 73
Draws AJCongress Challenge

But Cohen stood by the
AJC's earlier assertion —
which Rabbi Kanter had at-
tacked—that the Navy was
engaging in a contradiction
in terms when it said its
support of the year-long
evangelical campaign does
not imply proselytizing ef-
forts.

A local rabbi's defense of
the Navy chaplaincy corps,
printed in The Jewish News
March 23, was challenged .in
a letter from the American
Jewish Congress executive
director, who assailed the
Navy's "conversion of the
chaplaincy from a role of
service to one of advocacy"
in supporting Key 73.
Richard Cohen, in his let-
ter to Rabbi 'Morton M. Kan-
ter of Temple Beth El, con-
ceded that the leadership of
the chaplaincy corps prob-
ably is "fair, unbigoted and
concerned about the welfare
of all its men and women."

"The Navy memorandum
is entirely at odds with that
assumption. It converts the
chaplaincy from a role of ser-
vice to one of advocacy. It
says with respect to Key '73
that "we will be as suppor-
tive as possible within the
naval service."

"There's a difference be-
tween providing matzo for
Jewish soldiers attending a
seder on an Army base and
an active campaign• urging
all soldiers to attend. The
Navy memo calls, in effect, on
Navy chaplains to engage in
religious proselytization. We
regard this as unfair and
we would hope that the cha-
plaincy service would , not
merely issue a denial to our
complaint, but actively spell
out to all chaplains that—
in Admiral Garrett's own
words—Key 73 would not
`be used by chaplains to
either proselytize those of
another faith or reflect in
any way on them'."
