I am definitely not advo-
cating the censorship or sup-
pression of "The Merchant
of Venice." What I am advo-
cating as forcefully as I can
is that "The Merchant of
Venice" is not, in view of
recent - history; a proper ve-
hicle for stage, screen, radio
or television. The lovers of
Shakespeare should be con-
tent to read it in the library
or study it in the university
classroom. There, whatever
fine passages the play pos-
sesses can be fully appreci-
ated and savored, and its
medieval animus be mitigat-
ed by historical interpr
tion. There the play can
its proper place among the
creations of Shakespeare's
literary genius. ,
On the stage, or by way
of any of the other mass
media, "The Merchant of
Venice" is a thing of mur-
derous malice, and no insti-
tution that lays claim to the
advancement of civilization
should take responsibility for.
its promotion.

This tragic blunder is
being committed on t h e
theory of the divinity of
Shakespeare. Being divine,
he could not even be suspec-
ted of having an unworthy
thought. Therefore, goes the
cultic argument, "The Mer-
chant of Venice" must be
right. It must be "good for
the Jews," no matter what
agony it causes them to see
the centers of humane cul-
ture revive the "murder
weapon" of beastly Nazis,
namely the injection into
the public mind of the image
of the Jew as the embodi-

was that they were Jews?
I am not here pronouncing
an indictment of either
Wayne State University or
the 'directors of the Bonstelle
Theater. They are only doing
what everybody else is doing.
Under the dictate of Shake-
speare cult, "The Merchant
of Venice" is now being pro-
duced at the Lincoln Center
in New York, at the Strat-
ford Theather in Canada, at
Stratford-on-Avon in England
and who knows where else.

This is not to attribute anti-
Semitic motives to the pro-
ducers of the play. It is the
text which is anti-Semitic,
and there is no trick of di-
rection which can alter that
stern fact. Shakespeare cre-
ated the image of a Jew who
loves his ducats more than
he loves his daughter, a Jew
whose life is dominated by a
passionate love for money,
and a blood-thirsty hatred of
Christians. Wha t is more,
this Jew is obviously in-
tended by Shakespeare to be
accepted as the typical Jew,
for throughout the play Shy-
lock is seldom called by his
given name. He is nearly al-
ways addressed as "Jew."
This is in Shakespeare's
text, and it is a living testi-
mony to the clay feet of the
idol of English literature.
What sense does it make
for a university in a great
American city to use its
theatrical facilities to revive
on the stage the very image
of the Jew which the Nazis
recently employed so effec-
tively to massacre 6,000,000
innocent men, women and

The sad fact is that this
play comes alive only when
it becomes the mouthpiece
for anti-Jewish prejudice. It
is only in the scenes where
the Jew is mocked, harassed
and tormented that the clas-
sic lines come through
clearly and produce their in-
tended effect of stirring up
hatred against the Jew.

After sitting through the
three-hour-long performance
of "The Merchant of Venice"
at Wayne State University's
Bonstelle Theather, I could
not help but reach the con-
clusion that William Shake-
speare can be a bore.
The house was filled, and
there were many young peo-
ple all earnestly trying to
appear patrons of "culture,"
but their eager faces could
not quite disguise the essen-
tial boredom that afflicted
them, and they could not
quite suppress an occasional
-yawn.
