Soaring Meat Prices Plague Israelis, Too JERUSALEM (JTA) — A stunned public was informed Tuesday that the price of frozen meat will rise by near- ly 50 per cent along with sharp increases in the prices of other basic commodities including sugar, fuel and to- bacco. Prices soared after Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir intro- duced new subsidy policies for which the treasury hopes to get Knesset approval, be- fore the current fiscal year ends March 31. The reduction of govern- ment prices supports was ex- pected to raise prices but Israelis apparently were not prepared for the steep in- crease in meat prices and the 38 per cent rise in the price of sugar. _T_ TISSOT OFFICIAL AGENCY TRUSTED FOR ACCURACY SINCE 1853 AUTHORIZED SALES & SERVICE CERTIFIED MASTER WATCHMAKER AND JEWELER Harvard Row Shopping Center Lahser & 11 Mile Phone 353-3146 Sapir also signed regula- tions raising the price of gas- oline by 12 per cent, cigar- ettes by 15 per cent, cooking gas, heating fuel and parafin by about 17 per cent. The price of flour was also pn the way up though the ex- act percentage remained un- decided. On the other hand, Sapir apparently bowing to pres- sure from Histadrut agreed not to raise the prices of milk, dairy products, eggs and poultry. Price supports on those items are expected to be increased. Sapir told the cabinet this week that the present subsi- dies the government pays to keep prices stable were no longer adequate. union's response to the price hikes. One of the first reactions came from the Egged and Dan bus cooperatives which warned that they would raise their fares to cover' the in- creased cost of gasoline. His- tadrut urged them to hold back on fare hikes. The prices of many staples will remain steady. These in- clude fish, tea, coffee, pota- toes, bread, cocoa 'and edible oils. The sharply increased price of sugar is expected to affect the prices of such foods as cake, noodles, breakfast cereals, jams, confectionary fruits and fruit juices.
