Beth" El Students rursue Creative
Bent in Special Interest Activities

Flint News I

Temple Beth El's religious
school is in another round of
the interest group program,
spearheaded by Mrs. Clifford
Hart.
Round three had Charles
Speights demonstrating the
flutaphone, culminating in a
concert.
Mrs. Carl Schwartz and her
group worked on Torah cov-
ers and ark curtains for use
on Torahs housed in small
arsk constructed by Dr. Mor-
ton Stanley and his wood-
working crew.
At the same time, Mrs.
Harold Plotnik and Mrs. Je-
rome Winegarden Jr. led a
class through modern dance,
while Eileen Rosenberg and
Dr. Herman Gould conducted
illustrated Bible studies.
Round four brought out the
puppet makers with several
groups led by Mrs. Erwin
Gutowitz, Eileen Rosenberg
and Dr. Herman Gould con-
structing marionettes for use
in Purim plays. At the sane
time, Ed Shapiro and his
crew of carpeters and seam-
stresses were building a pup-
pet stage. Mrs. Milton Pan-
zer directed a group making
halla, bagels and pita.

The Making of a Man

The coming of manhood at
13 is assumed in Judaism,
but rarely is the Bar Mitzva
given the opportunity to
prove
Last weekend, Flint's worst
snowstorm in ages put Ron-
ald Marc Chapiro, son of Mr.

Bnai Brith Men
to Hear Official

and Mrs. Edward Shapiro, to
the test.
The Saturday m orning
service had to be canceled
that very morning. One hun-
dred phone calls to guests
had to be made by Ron, his
sister Amy and friends. Fol-
lowing phone conferences
with the rabbi, caterer,
weather bureau and family,
it was decided to hold a Sun-
day evening service.
Ron, with complete accep-
tance of what could not be
changed, set about to learn
a weekday evening service.

On Sunday morning, the
snow drifts still were piled
as high as four to five feet
in places, and city streets
were still impassable. Phone
calls and conferences again
were made; and a Monday
morning service was sched-
uled. Again, Ron set out to
learn a weekday morning
service.

Errol_ I m b e r, director of
programing s e r vices for
the national office of Bnai
Brith, will conduct a work-
shop/demonstration at a Bnai
Brith Lodge meeting Tues-
day at Howard Johnson
Motor Lodge East. The meet-
_ ing is open to everyone. Re-
freshments will be served. A
short business meeting will
follow the program. Imber
has held many Bnai Brith
positions, including field rep-
resentative of District Grand
Lodge 6 and director of
lodge services for District
Grand Lodge 2.

Throughout the entire
weekend of disappointment
and cancellations, observers
saw the Shapiro family unite
in understanding. sympathy
and wit — as well as a lot of
snow shoveling and gratitude
to God for the safety of those
who, not knowing of the Sat-
urday postponement, h a d
made the treacherous trip
from Detroit "to Flint in a
record five hours. The driv-
ers of the Detroit carloads
were Mrs. Harry Aronovitz,
Dr. Alden Leib and Jack
Lorber.
That Monday, Ronald Marc
Shapiro became a Bar Mitz-
va — finally.
