The Labor Party's central committee nominated the 57- year-old Weizmann Institute biophysicist ;last Thursday but his margin of 56-44 per cent over his principal rival Deputy Knesset Speaker Yit- zhak Navon, was disappoint- ing to the party leaders who backed him. D r . Katchalski returned from the U.S. as a serious rift developed over his candi- dacy between the Labor Party's Mapai faction which had vigorously promoted his nomination and the party's Rafi wing which backed Na- von. Katchalski t o 1 d re- porters that he had learned of the repercussions while on his way home to Israel but offered no further comment. The intra-party rift was further aggravated by the disclosure of a letter written to Navon by former Premier David Ben-Gurion who said that Navon should have been elected and expressed regrets that he wasn't. The Jerusalem branch of the Labor Party which fa- vored Navon has moved to create a new bloc within the party to counter the Tel Aviv Mapai leaders who promoted Katchalski's nomination. • Je- rusalem party leaders are also reported to have con- tacted the Haifa branch and local town branchs with the view of establishing a new group within the party. Two Rafi leaders, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan and Transport Minister Shimon Peres, visited Navon sepa- rately in Jerusalem. Students at Israeli universities planned a pro-Navon rally in Jeru- salem Wednesday. So far only Mapam and Knesset member Uri Avneri of the one-man Haolam Hazeh fa c t i on have an- nounced that they will sup- port Katchalski. Bitterness has already been expressed by Navon and his supporters over the me- thods employed by the party leadership to promote Katch- alski's candidacy. Navon, who is a leader of the Sephardic community, hinted on a radio :interview that there may have been anti-Sephardic bias on the part of the Labor:Party lead. ers who had worked to de- feat him. He said he would "weigh very carefully whether and how to come out publicly about some of the ugly me- thods used by the party ma- stemmed from his associa- tion with the Labor Party's Rafi wing. Navon's bitterness was di- rected toward the party, not toward its choice. He re- marked, following the cen- tral committee vote, "if. out of a desire to defeat my can- didacy we got Ephraim Katchalski, it was worth it" Meanwhile, Prof. Ephrain Urbach, a Hebrew University talmudic scholar, emerged as a possible rival to Katchalski. Prof. Urbach, the apparent choice of the National Relig- ious Party, was reportedly undecided how to respond to NRP urgings that he run. NRP leaders who .met in the Knesset Tuesday night to discuss the possibility of nom- inating a 'rival to the Labor Party's candidate, hinted that the Gahal opposition faction was favorable toward Urbach. But the NRP, a coalition partner, was re- ported to be under heavy pressure from the Labor Party not to nominate a candidate of its own.
