with two of the occurrences
in the lifetime of this gener-
ation. He described the
Emancipation epoch as' in-
complete, and as unneces-
sary with the rebirth of Is-
rael.
The Holocaust was por-
trayed as a challenge not to
be forgotten and Israel's ex-
istence as "an affirmation of
life," as a great testament of
faith after Auschwitz.
Condemning the revival of
"the ghost of the dual loyalty
charge," Dr. Fackenheim
emphasized the human right
of adhering both to American
loyalties and the loyalty to
faith and the cultural back-
ground. He said any question
about a Jew's right to loyalty
to Judaism is obscene.
Dr. Fackenheim especially
appealed for understanding
by the youth of the events he
outlined. He expressed the
view that the so-called New
Left is a dying movement,
and he encouraged' the loyal-
ties that are needed to rele-
gate the Holocaust to the role

of the inhuman experience
never to be forgotten.

Auschwitz, it is necessary to
emphasize the role of the Jew
as •a witness against the evil,
he said. "Precisely because
of the Holocaust we should
have more Jewish children."
His comment was on the
million children murdered by
the Nazis in the death camps.
He pointed to the need for
emphasis on the Jewish role,
on the witnessing of an un-
dying existence, "else,". he
said, "we give Hitler a pos-
thumous victory."
Dr. Fackenheim, critical of
anti-Israel and proselytizing
positions of some Christians,
added that any effort to re-
duce Jewish ranks would be
interpreted as a Hitler-like
approach to destroying the
community. He severely con-
demned such, attitudes.
Listing three epoch-making
events in 2,000 years of Jew-
ish history, Dr. Fackenheim
spoke of the Emancipation,
the Holocaust and the emer-
gence of Israel's statehood,
