CBS Newsman Charges U.S. Has a 'Double Standard' on Israel, Arabs
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
There was no immediate re-
action from administration
sources to CBS News White
House correspondent Robert
Pierpoint's charge that the
U. S. government followed a
"double standard" in its re-
sponse to acts of violence
and terror by both Israel and
Palestinian terrorists.
In a biting attack over the
CBS radio network March 7,
Pierpoint noted that Secre-
tary of State William P:
Rogers had suggested the
death penalty for eight ter-
rorists who murdered two
American and one Belgian
diplomats in Khartoum.
But "there was next to no
outcry in this country" when

LONDON (JTA) — Jews,
formerly residents in Libya,
have been the chief victims
of a law under which the
Libyan government has con-
fiscated all moveable and
immoveable property and
assets of foreign nationals,
the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency was told.
The matter of confisca-
tions was discussed in the
House of Lords.
Lord Janner told the JTA
that the confiscations were
carried out under the pro-
visions of Law 57 of 1970.
He said that of 643 vic-
tims, 628 were Jews.
Lord Janner asked the
government how many Bri-
tish subjects were involved.

The Histadrut leader, a
controversial figure in the
Labor Party leadership be-
cause of his outspoken dovish
views on the matter of future
borilers, claimed that the
current economic policy,
"guided by one or two per-
sons" had produced "social-
Urn in reverse by expropriat-
ing public funds for the en-
richment of a few"
. Ben Aharon addressed a
Labor Party faction known
as "E t g a r" (Challenge)
which includes many form-
er senior army officers.
One of his main targets
was Finance Minister Pin-
has Sapir, the acknowledged
architect of Israel's economic
policies.
Sapir later refused to
comment • on Ben Aharon's
remarks.
The union leader claimed
that the government's eco-
nomic policies "endanger our
very existence."
He said: "We are living
in an unreal'situation Creat-
ed out of Hollywood. Our liv-
ing standards are based on
funds mobilized to buy
Phantoms and to absorb im-
migrants and those close to
the coffers get rich. Public
money gets wasted and the
nouveau riche wax fatter,
like cancer in the national
bloodstream."
Ben Aharon said it was a
"disgrace to the nation" that
60 70,000 families live . in
poverty and 30.40,000 boys
and girls are "wasting away
on the fringe of our society
in Musrara (a Jerusalem
shim) and in Beisan and
Hatzar (two new immigrant
townships)."
He conceded that there
must be a pluralistic econo-
my. "We need a planned and
guided economy with a ceil-
ing on what people may
earn," he said.
all, and the sooner the
better."
He said that neither Rogers
or Scott mentioned a trial or
"the possibility that if a fair
trial were held it might turn
out that not all the terrorists
were guilty of the murders."
"What this seems to add
up to is a double standard
in this country toward terror
and murder," Pierpoint said.
"For so long, Americans
have become used to think-
ing of the Israelis as the
good guys, and Arabs as the
bad guys, that many react
emotionally along the lines
of previous prejudices. The
fact is that both sides have
committed unforgiveable acts
of terror. Both sides have
killed innocents. Both sides
have legitimate grievances
and illegimate methods of
expressing them."
Pierpoint said the Arab act
of sheer terror may be the
"more irrational. At least it
was not backed by a rela-
tively rational government
which justifies its actions as more study, balance and fair
necessary."

Why? Because we don't have a tailor.
And why should we . . . when we
don't make alterations. We don't
deliver either . . . and we don't extend
credit or accept credit cards. And
the reason we don't offer any of
these services is to save money.
But why should you care if we
