Jewish Practice Key to Learning, Bnai Brith Education Unit Told

NEW YORK — Bnai Brith
adult Jewish education pro-
grams will see a shift in em-
phasis from "studying Jew-
ish books" to "living a Jew-
ish lifestyle," it was decided
by Bnai Brith's commission
on adult Jewish education at
its three-day annual meeting
here.
Martin D. Cohn, of Hazel-
ton, Pa., chairman of the
commission, said "Learning
does not necessarily lead to
action, and Jewish values are
not transmitted intellectually
but through living experi-
ences that, in their doing,
teach of the emotion and po-
etry in authentic Jewish life-
styles."
Dr. Leon A. Jick, director
of the Council of Jewish Fed-
erations and Welfare Funds'
Institute of Jewish Life, who

addressed the opening session
of the commission at the
Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, de-
plored the "weak links that
exist between Jewish intel-
lectuals and the Jewish com-
munity." He proposed organ-
ized programs to train cadres
of Jewish laymen to become
leaders of informal educa-
tional activities.
The annual Jewish Heri-

tage Award luncheon hon-
ored Dr. Nahum Glatzer of
Brandeis University and Is-
raeli novelist Amos Oz for
their literary achievements.
