April 1 Proclaimed for Hilel Leader NEW YORK- (JTA)-April 1 has been proclaimed by Brooklyn Borough President Sebastian Leone as "Dr. Norman E. Frimer Day" in recognition of the Hillel rabbi's "lifelong concern for the moral, intellectual and spiritual welfare of college youth and the contribution he has made to the civic, religious and intellectual at- tainments of the borough." Dr. Frimer, who is mark- ing his 25th year in the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundations, will be honored at a dinner that evening given by the Brook- lyn College Hillel Foundation where he served as director. For the past five years. he has been national Hillel co- ordinator of the New York, bletrtipoeibia , at'ea. Cultists Arrested on Drug Charge TORONTO (JTA)-A Jetti- ish youth and his girl friend, both from New Jersey, re- ported by authorities here to have been duped by priests of a bizarre African religion, have received seven-year jail terms on conviction of having brought 32 pounds of mari- juana to Canada from Ja- maica. Ilene Schechter, 21, and Gary Allen Mayer, 22, of Springfield, N. J., spent six months in custody awaiting trial. That period is being de- ducted from the prison terms, officials said. The officials said that the marijuana, packed in cookie tins, was discovered by cus- tom officials at Toronto air- port. The pair said they were carrying "blessings of the earth" to members of a Ras- tafari (African based) sect in Collingswood, Ontario, before returning to New Jersey to be married. They told the court they were from Jewish families, had been disillusioned by the "hypocrisy" they said they found in Judaism and had been seeking "truth" which they said they had discover- ed in the Rastafari move- ment.
