A Windsor Synagogue Withers
Front Old Age and Vandalism

Time and vandals are de-
stroying an historic landrhark
of the Orthodox Jewish com-
munity in Windsor.
Tifereth Israel Synagogue,
was started nearly 50 years
ago for the east end Jewish
community by Barney Hui,
witz, an Austrian immigrant
who ran a steamship agency
and a glove factory; Abra-
ham Adler, a baker from
Poland; and Harry Luborsky,

a native of Lithuania. Lubor-
sky is the only surviving
founder.
Tifereth Israel Synagogue
40 Orthodox Jewish families,
but now there are only two
active members and some
associates.
Today, Luborsky and liar-
old Swartz take care of the
synagogue. The outside shows
the marks of age and van-
dalism, crumbling steps,
broken panels of glass and
chipped wood . A battered
door leads to a crystal chan-
deliered sanctuary, with a
ceiling of sky blue.
A pair of carved lions and
a painted eagle adorn the
ark. However, worn carpet-
ing and chairs stacked up

of Sinai Hospital's Shapero
School of Nursing in a recent
election. He has been • board
member of the nursing school
for the past five years.

A Royal Oak dentist was
named one of the Michigan
Jaycees' five out-standing
young men in ceremonies
in Saginaw.
Dr. Richard E. Klein, 31,
was hos.wed for his contri-
bui:onr in the field of oral
cancer prevention.
He originated and organ-
ized the first free oral and
cervical cancer examinations
given by any organization in
the country. The project is
expected to benefit more than
10,000 people from the met-
ropolitan area this year.
Dr. Klein is a volunteer
member of the Michigan Can-
cer Foundation and currently
serves as president of the
South Oakland unit.

Weekly services were held
at 7:30 a.m. to allow mem-
bers to open their businesses
by 9:30. These services
ended two years ago, and
only the High Holy Days and
some intermediate holidays
are celebrated.
It costs only about $360 a
year for the heating bill. But
there are other problems.
"It's often difficult to mus-
ter a 'minyan.' We have to
recruit from other congrega-
tions," Swartz said. Lubor-
sky leads services.
The men say they try their
best to keep up the syna-
gogue.

Talk Scheduled
on Soviet Jewry
by Rosenblum

The Detroit Action Com-
mittee on Soviet Jewry will
host Dr. Lou Rosenblum 2
p.m. Sunday at the 10 Mile
branch of the Jewish Center.
He will speak on the "Adopt-
A-Family" program.
Dr. Rosenblum, chairman
of the Union of Councils for
Soviet Jewry, recently re-
turned from a trip to Israel.
He will give information on
the effect of the education
tax, suppression of the Jew-
ish underground, new visa
restrictions and assimilation
into Israeli life of Soviet
olim.
Dr. Rosenblum will detail
the American impact on the
release of Soviet Jews.
