Passover Plea for Needy

T h e annual pre-Passover
appeal on behalf of needy
Detroit area Jews has been
issued by Morris Dorn, pres-
ident of Mo'os Hitim Organi-
zation of Detroit, Inc.
Dorn. who with his wife
• has headed the organization
; for the past 50 years, said
'there is special need this
• year for funds to s u pp 1 y
matzo, matzo products, wine
and cash for elderly Jews,
refugee families and others
receiving state aid.
Last year. some 500 indi-
!viduals and families — total-
! ing more than 2,000 persons
— received such Passover
assistance. A contribution to
Mo'os Hitim is one of the
mitzvot pertaining to Pass-
over observance that are in-
cumbent upon every Jew.

These people are among the 227 U.S. Jewish servicemen and their families who
studied Judaism at a Torah Convocation conducted in Berchtesgaden, Germany. by
Rabbi Richard C. Hertz (front row, third left), a member of the commission on Jewish
chaplaincy of the National Jewish Welfare Board. The group reflects the growing

Sternberg, director of USO operations in Frankfurt, Germany, helped set up the
Torah Convocation for the Jewish personnel and their families. Torah Convocations,
conducted in cooperation with JWB's commission on Jewish chaplaincy, are part of
the U.S. armed forces program to provide spiritual uplift for military personnel.

Rabbi Waxman is the edi-
tor of a volume, "Tradition
and Change," which contains
classical writings of the Con-
servative movement, and is
the editor of Conservative
Judaism, a quarterly journal.
Vice president of the Rab-
binical Assembly, profes-
sional organization of Con-
servative rabbis, he is one
of the movement's chief
critics from within.
First hour classes begin
at 7:45. The lecture, mod-
erated by Rabbi Jacob E.
Segal, will be followed by a
social hour.
During the first hour of

mour Rosenbloom moderates
a class on "Moral Issues of
Our Times," with Richard
Chosid and Fred Gold, guest
speaker will be Brig. Gen.
S. L. A. Marshall, former
military affairs analyst for
the Detroit News. He will
discuss "Moral Aspects of
Modern Day War."

Synagogue Donates
31 Torahs to Israel

NEWARK, N.J. (JTA) —
Cong. Kehilat Israel, which'
closed its doors se v e r al
months ago, has donated 31
Torah scrolls for needy syn-
agogues in Israel.
They were presented to Is-
rael Counsul Michael Sha-
shar by Sam Stein, president
of t h e congregation, a n d
members of the board of di-
rectors at the Israeli Con
sulate in New York.
Shashar promised to for-
ward them to Israel.

Synagogues for Olim

JERUSALEM — Tempo-
rary synagogues for Soviet
immigrants in -Israel have
been set up in 2.5 flats by the
ministry of absorption. Most
are for ohm from Georgia.
Permanent synagogues will
be provided later by the
ministry for religious affairs,
which also distributes prayer
packages (containing a tallit,
tefillin, a Pentateuch, prayer-
book, skullcap and candle-
sticks) to immigrants on
their arrival.
