Swiss Give Milk
to JEW Fund
NEW YORK — A contribu-
tion of 220,500 pounds of
powdered milk to the Joint
Distribution Committee by
the Swiss government was
reported by Samuel L. Ha-
ber, executive vice chairman
of the JDC. A like amount
was donated in 1972. •
•
The Swiss government also
has underwritten the costs of
packing, inland freight and
half the ocean freight, as it
did last year, llaber said.
This has increased the total
value of the Swiss contribu-
tion to $193,000. The milk will
be used in JDC programs in
Israel, Iran and Yogoslavia,
he added.
The milk will be used in a
feeding program serving
6,400 children in JDC-sup-
ported Jewish school s. It
also will be used in programs
. ,
such as pregnant women, in-
fants a n d undernourished
children.
In Israel, the milk will be
used in feeding programs in
JDC-assisted yeshivot and in
a number of JDC-Malben
homes for the aged. The con-
signment to Yugoslavia will
go to the Jewish old-age
home in Zagreb .
JDC receives funds for its
health, welfare and rehabili-
tation programs in 25 coun-
tries around the world, main-
ly from the campaigns of the
United Jewish Appeal.

ASHKELON — Call the
mayor an idiot, and you're
liable to land a IL 150
($37.50) fine.
That's what Pinhas Umidi
learned in the Israel court
recently. The local merchant
received the fine for insulting
Ashkelon Mayor Avraham
Blasberg.
Umidi admitted in Mag-
istrate's Court that he had
entered the mayor's office to
ask why a letter he had writ-
ten had gone unanswered.
When the mayor didn't re-
spond, Umidi called out
"Liar. Idiot." Judge Yitzhak
Banal issued the fine for his
having insulted the mayor
while the latter was carrying
out his duties.

Appeals for help have gone
out to persons believed to
have relatives buried in a
Jewish Cemetery in Ham-
tramck, which repeatedly
has been vandalized.
Irwin I. Cohn heads the
effort to rehabilitate the cem-
etery, owned by Cong. Shaa-
rey Zedek and containing
graves dating back to the
late 1800s.
After the cemetery was al- •
most destroyed by vandals,
Shaarey Zedek helped mater-
ial!y in putting up new
fences, rebuilding
placing monuments and ar-
ranging security precautions.
Cohn credited Maurice Schil-
ler with being particularly
helpful in this area.
Now, Cohn hopes to reach
surviving relatives of those
who are buried in the ceme-
tery so that a maintenance
fund can be created to en-
sure the continued care of
the cemetery.
Cohn has
m iled a list -
ing of all who are buried
there and hopes that those
who may not have been
reached by mail will respond
after reading the following

Russian-born Igor Galanin, a talented painter who has been in the United States
only since October, already has received a commission from a major American pub-
lisher to illustrate a book of Russian children's stories. The photo at right is a black
and white reproduction of one of Galanin's colorful illustrations. At left. Galanin
shows some of his other work to Anne Serzane, supervisor of the family service depart-
of NYANA, the New York Association for New Americans. Galanin is one of some
600 Russian Jewish migrants who have been resettled in the greater New York area
with the aid of NYANA, which provides financial assistance, casework, vocational and
educational services to about half of all Jewish newcomers to the United States, in-
cluding a large majority of the recent migrants from Russia with funds from the
campaigns of the United Jewish Appeal.
