WSU Paper Not Suppressed; End to Bigotry Demanded

statutes governing South End
and other student publica-
tions.
Cunningham responded with
a refusal to resign and from
present indications he may
remain editor of the paper,
but the new regulations are
expected to assure a change
in the overcharged situation
that has created tension on
the campus, and in the larger
Detroit community.
Ten members of the Mich-
igan State Legislature asked
for a role in resolving the is-
sue which assumed a Black-
White and Black-Jewish as-
pect in the continuing edi-
torial expressions in South
End. President Gullen em-
phasized that the campus
paper must change radically
to serve as disseminator of
campus news in addition to
carrying editorial opinions.
James Parks, a WSU student
who serves on the nominating
committee in the selection of
publications board members,
commented that the anti-
Semitic propaganda was al-
ready in evidence last Au-
gust. He said that more than
5,000 students signed a peti-
tion he was circulating de-
manding an end to the prej-
udices in South End and a
change in the conduct of the
paper. Parks said that the
signatures he secured were
overwhelmingly from non-
Jews in spite of the transfor-
mation of the controversy into
a Jewish issue.

WSU board of governors that
"it is simply too late to study
the situation, it is time to act
responsibly."
