Scholars Set Up
World Institute
Sephardic Studies

NEW YORK (JTA)—Sev-
eral Jewish scholars in New
York have decided to estab:
lists "the World Institute for
Sephardic Studies."
As scholars who are close
to the Sephardic culture and
tradition, they have reached
the conclusion that there is
only one way to solve the
crisis that faces the Sephar.
dic world.
"It will be solved only
through education and organ-
ization of the Sephardic corn.
munities," said Prof. Jose
Faur, president and founder
of the World Institute for
Sephardic Studies (WISS).
The WISS was founded "pre-
cisely to meet these specific
aims," he adds.
Dr. Haim Tawil, an Israeli
of Yemenite descent, who
teaches Bible at the ITS, as-
serts that one of the main
immediate goals of WISS is
to "help develop a future
cadre of positive and respon-
sible Sephardic leadership."

THE DETROIT JEWIS/1 NEWS
Friday, Feb. 16, 1173-1S

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
initial phase of the 1973
United Jewish Appeal cam-
paign in New York City,
Long Island and Westchester
has raised a record-breaking
827,500,000.
This was announced by the
campaign chairmen, builder-
philanthropist William J.
Levitt and former Congress-
man Herbert Tenzer, after
totaling up the results of the
first major event of the cam-
paign, the United Jewish Ap-
peal of Greater New York's
annual pacesetters dinner
attended by contributors of
$10,000 or more.
New York UJA aims to
raise $150,000,000 in 1973.
SIx hundred persons of
prominence heard Israeli
Ambassador to the United
Nations Yosef Tekoah say
that there is still no sign
that the Arab states are
ready to make peace and that
"the pronouncements of the.
Arab leaders remind us of
their goal (stated in 1948)
to eliminate the Jewish peo-
ple."
Tekoah called the recent
influx of immigrants from
the Soviet Union "the life-
line of Israel's security . . .
the most important and un•
doubtedly one that is most
welcome" and "the greatest
miracle in Jewish history
since Israel's independence."
Ile added, however, that "the
need to defend ourselves still
overshadowsevery thing
else."
Guests of honor were Mrs-
hulam Riklis and Laurence
Tisch, chairmen of the 1971
and 1972 New York UJA
campaigns.

for Villas in Israel

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—Within
the last two years, prices for
villas in fashionable Savyon
have risen 75 per cent, with
indications that prices will
go even higher in the future.
A private house selling for
IL 175,000 (843,750) in the
early part of 1970 now sells
for IL 300,000 (575.000).
Real estate brokers explain
that escalating costs result
from the rising value of land.
An area of 1• dunams (one-
third acre) on which the villa
is constructed, which used to
cost IL 100,000 (525.000), is
now IL 170,000 ($42,500). At
j the same time, the costs of j
labor and building materials'
have risen sharply.
