`Neo-Isolationistn on Campus Offsets Sympathy for Israel'

The unrelenting anti-Israel
attitude of the South End,
Wayne State University's
"student publication," is by
no means characteristic of
the campus mood across the
country.
So says Josh Muravchik,
national chairman of the
Youth Committee for Peace
and Democracy in the Middle
East, who spoke Sunday eve-
ning at the Jewish Center
for the Layman's Institute on
the Middle East.

Although Wayne is "one
of the last real strongholds
of the extremist element,"
the majority of American
college students is largely
sympathetic to Israel, Mur-
avchik believes.
At the same time, the
growth of neo-isolationism
and de-politicization on cam-
pus in the wake of the Viet-
nam War could bode ill for
Israel. And now that the im-
mediate threat of war has
receded in the Middle East,
Jewish student groups are
being caught up in the wave
of apathy. Muravchik fears
the "dangerous neglect" of
Israel's problems even
among students who are pro-
Israel.
Thus, he cautioned, "the
student activists and the
community as a whole must
remain vigilant and alert. At
the moment, there Is relative
calm, but who knows what
will happen in a year? What
if there is a reintroduction
of the Rogers Plan, or a new,
extreme leadership in Egypt
to replace Sadat? It is ur-
gent that we not be lulled
into complacency. If a new
crisis develops, we may have
a new problem on campus."
He said there are 6,000
Arab students in the U. S.,

delman and Greenwald were
representatives to the UJA
Student Mission in Israel in
December.
The campaign's first speak-
er, the Rev. John Grauel,
will speak at Wayne State
University !fillet 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday. Ile will tell of his
experience on the ship Exo-
dus. All are welcome.
Born in Worcester, Mass.,
Mr. Grauel started his min-
istry as the pastor of a Meth-
odist parish on the coast of
Maine.

Reports of Nazi persecu-
tions led him to resign his
pulpit and join the American
Christian Palestine Commit-
tee, dedicated to the estab-
lishment of the state of Israel.
Shortly afterward, Mr.
Gravel became a member of
the Hagana and an active
figure in the European un-
derground. To his co-work-
ers, he was a mysterious fig-
ure known by the code name
of "John the Priest."
In 1947, Mr. Grauel volun-
teered for the crew of Exo-
dus 1947, carrying 4.500 Jew-
ish displaced persons from
the concentration camas to
Palestine. The ship was over-
taken by the British Navy
and its passengers removed
to prison ships and retifrned

to Germany. He submitted
a graphic report on the inci-
dent to the United Nations
Special Committee on Pales-
tine, in which he told of the
British naval attack on the
Exodus and the suffering of
its passengers.
This report was a factor in
the series of events which
brought about the United Na-
tions resolution for the por-
tion of Palestine and the es-
tablishment of the state of
Israel.
For nearly two decades,
Mr. Grauel has continued his
efforts on behalf of Israel.
He also is active in pro-
grams concerned with civil
rights and the ecumenical
movement.
