Special Jewish News
U. of M. Correspondent
The newly formed Judaic
Studies program at the Uni-
versity of Michigan is rapid-
ly expanding and experienc-
ing in the process certain
limitations. The most press-
ing need is for Judaic liter-
ature for donations to make
purchases possible.
Prof. Herbert Paper of
the department of linguis-
tics says:
"Many Jews in the great-
er Detroit area have in their
homes valuable Judaic ma-
terial, as well as Yiddish
and Hebrew books that they
simply don't know where to
store.
"Often these volumes turn
up in shopping centers, being
sold for a nickel apiece.
Worse yet, they are some-
times thrown away."
Paper said that if these
books were donated to the
Judaic Studies pr ogr a m,
they would be an asset to
students and professors for

State Democratic Party Elects
Morley Winograd as Chairman

Morley A. Winograd, 30,
was elected state chairman
of the Democratic Party at
its state convention last
weekend.
Winograd, who lives in
Troy, emerged as victor at
the close of a six-hour battle
at the Cobo Arena conven-
tion, at which Stuart Hertz-
berg presided as chairman.
Four others were bidding for
the party chairmanship.
Winograd was nominated by
Atty. Gen. Frank J. Keiley
and supported by the UAW.
Active in the party for
only four years, Winograd
was currently serving as
chairman of the Oakland
County Democratic Commit-
tee, having been elected in
1971 and re-elected this year.
He was Oakland County co-
ordinator of Sen. Philip
Hart's re-election campaign
in 1970 and chairman of the
Troy Democratic Club in
1969-70.
Another active member of
the Oakland County Demo-
cratic executive committee,
Daniel Berk, was elected to
the Democratic State Central
Committee at the conven•

research purposes.

Prof. Jehuda Reinhart of
the department of history
said: "I am especially limit-
ed in my seminar classes,
because of the lack of re-
search facilities. Additional

resources are desperately

needed to adequately edu-
cate students."
Paper and Reinhart both
remarked on the lack of
creative literature, as well
as periodicals about modern
Jewish history. Reinhart
added, "We find it difficult
to locate creative writing in
Yiddish and Hebrew because
there was little demand for
such literature in this coun-
try, especially in class-
rooms."
In another six months, the
supply of material will
dwindle drastically, when
Public Law 480, an act of
Congress, terminates. Un-
der P.L. 480, governments
owing money to the United
States could send literature
to libraries throughout this
country to partially repay
their debts. The University
of Michigan was one of the
beneficiaries of this pro-
gram.
People interested in donat-
ing Judaic literature and/or
money, should direct their
correspondence to Professor
Jehuda Reinhart, University
of Michigan. History Depart -
ment, 3626 Haven Hall, Ann
Arbor, or to Professor Her-
bert Paper, University of
Michigan, Linguistics De-
partment, 1088 Frieze Build-
ing, Ann Arbor.
Reinhart is teaching a
course on Jewish history in

the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries, which has expand-
ed in enrollment from 40
students last semester to 110
now. Similarly, his advanced
seminar on Zionism has
grown from 10 to 20 stu-
dents.

Paper is teaching elemen-
tary Yiddish for the second

consecutive year.
Nearly 10 students are
currently enrolled as Jewish
Studies majors, a program
which only began in Sep-
tember. This number is ex-
pected to increase next year.

Chutzpa . . . for U.S.

JERUSALEM — Israeli co-
logne is being shipped to the
U.S. in greater quantities

than ever before. Two and a
half tons of Chutzpa—that's
what it's called — were air-

freighted recently to the U.S.

The 14,000 bottles represented
the largest consignment of
this product to be air-freight-
ed at one time. In the last
two years, T. S. Q., Ltd., the
company that makes the
Chutzpa, has exported 9300,-
000 of the eau de cologne.
