rnonial, telling how well he
had treated his aching feet.
But Dr. Zacharie also had
ideas of relieving the aches
of war. After the battle of
Gettysburg, he believed the
south was ready to make
peace and fell that if he were
permitted to go south he
might contribute to that end.
Secretary Seward opposed
the idea but Lincoln thought
it might he worth a whirl. So
Dr . Zacharie was given a
military pass which let him
through the Federal lines to
the Confederacy and he pro-
ceeded to Richmond and New
Orleans.
When he returned, we know
Lincoln was closeted with

him for over two hours. Pre-
sumably he gave Lincoln a
picture of the inner state of
mind of the Confederacy, but
the trip had no palpable ef-
fect on bringing the war to
an end, although Dr. Zach-
arie thuoght he had opened a
path. Dr. Zacharie said the
administration seemed to be
like the man who won an
elephant in a raffle. He didn't
know what to do with it. He
thought if his tips had been
followed, the Civil War might
have ended sooner.

Wedding Near
for Kissinger?

WASHINGTON — Specula-
tion that a wedding may be
near for Henry Kissinger
was aroused as he and
Nancy McGinnis accom-
panied his pirents to a party
here recently.
Maxine Cheshire, Wash-
ington columnist noted that
several foreign newspapers
had reported that Kissinger
and Miss McGinnis would be
married as soon as peace
was declared, although his
close friends did not believe
the reports.
The friends are still ques-
tioning Henry's matrimonial
plans, but he denies any im-
mediate intentions. Some
have thought this to mean
that he cannot announce
such plans without termin-
ating his government ser-
vice. He has said that he
would not marry while in his
present job.
A friend said that Kissing-
er's job puts him under
enough strain. "It's no way
to begin a marriage . . .
with him at the beck and
call of the President."
One source said that Miss
McGinnis hates to be in the
limelight and does not like
to be photographed with
Kissinger, one of the most
popular figures in Washing-
ton.
