said that very often these
are widows who are living
alone. They are often quite
able to take care of them-
selves but are afraid

to have a companion. In
some instances they sttould
like an individual to move in
with them and to share the
apartment. In other instances
they would like to offer room

Samuel Lerner, director of
Jewish Family and Chil-
dren's Service, announced
that the agency is launching
a campaign to recruit com-
panions for the elderly. He
called it a new example of
the outreach programs in-
stituted by the agency, an
attempt to be of service to a
large group of clients who
need special kinds of help,
for venom regular agency
services might not be avail-
able.

children are prepared to pay
for the services of such a

do come minor household
chores. However, the major
function will be to be a com-
panion, a caring individual
who will be there, share in
the responsibilities of the
home, and take away some
of the feeling of isolation
and loneliness which afflicts
the -elderly.
Lerner indicated that the
agency at present does not
have funds in its budget to
"hire" these companions,
but is willing to act as a
"shadhan" between the elder-
ly person and his/her fam-
ily and the prospective com-
panion. The agency is pre-
pared to screen applicants
and then put them in touch
with the families requesting
such services, for the two
parties can work out their
private arrangements as to
t I m e, remuneration a n d
whether the two individuals
involved can be compatible.
Lerner indicated that if
such arrangements do work
out, it not only can provide
supplementary income for
some women who could be
available five to seven days
a week, but would he a real
service to the many elderly
women or men who are liv-
ing alone.
The agency requests that
any one interested in the
service should contact Mrs.
Miriam Adler at Jewish
Family and Children's Ser-
vice, DI 1-5959.

Northland

Taxpayers looking for help
with federal income tax re-
turns will find it at a nearby
shopping center.
Between now and April 16,
Internal Revenue representa-
tives are serving the public
from mobile units, trailers
and booths, in addition to
regular IRS offices.
The free taxpayer service
facilities are located at 18
shopping centers and main
thoroughfare intersections in
metropolitan Detroit, includ-
ing Tel-Twelve and Oakland
malls and Northland Center.
District Director Thomas
A. Cardoza said the new
dimension in assistance is in
keeping with the IRS' tax-
payer service program motto
for 1973: "We Want to
Help."
Booths also are operating
at Macomb, Southland, and
Westland malls. Assistance
is offered at all five malls
from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. through
April 16.
IRS will have a Taxmobile
Trailer at Northland on the

Terrace through March 10.
Hours will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Taxmobile motorized
A

unit will visit 10 locations in
the Detroit area, spending
one week, including Satur-
days, at each location. Serv-
ice hours at these locations
are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. These "bus
stops" for the mobile unit
include the A & P Parking
Lot at Lahser and Six Mile
Rds., Feb. 20-24.
Cardoza urged taxpayers
to take advantage of the free
service as there are many
new features in both the 1040
and- 1040A tax forms that

may require clarification.
For answers to specific

questions, call the IRS of-
fice, 226-7520.
