Shazar, Knesset Cite Johnson for Achievements

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
President Zaiman Shazar of
Israel paid tribute on behalf
of his nation to the late Pres-
ident Lyndon B. Johnson,
eulogizing him for having
written "a glorious chapter in
the chronicle of friendship
between the young state of
Israel and mighty America."
President Johnson's funeral
was the third funeral for an
American President at which
Shazar represented the state
of Israel. He attended ser-
vices for the late President
Harry S. Truman here only

three weeks earlier. In No-
vember 1963, he attended the
funeral of President John F.
Kennedy.
Shazar observed in his eul-
ogy that "I must once more,
so soon after the passing of
Harry S. Truman, express
profound sorrow upon the un-
timely death of a great Amer-
ican President, a man of
many achievements and far.
ranging vision.
Shazar said: "I have never
forgotten being received by
him on the mournful day his
murdered predecessor was
buried and the mantle of lea-
dership fell upon him. Most
emphatically he assured me
that he would not depart
from and would even strength-
en the policy of friendly sup-
port for Israel. Ile did in-
deed do so and in most criti-
for your party
cal times, establishing princi-
ples which still light our
path."
In Jerusalem, Knesset
Speaker Israel Yeshayahu
eulogized President Johnson
at a Knesset session.
Cal
The Chief Rabbinate Coun-
cil also sent a message of
condolences to the Johnson
family. The message referred
to Mr. Johnson as "a right-
eous gentile."
One of the last letters writ-
ten by the late President
Lyndon B. Johnson before his
death Jan. 22 was addressed
to Irving Bernstein, execu-
tive vice chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal. It was
a response to an invitation to
meet with the UJA's national
young leadership cabinet at
a seminar scheduled to be
held next Sept. 13-16 in Aus-
tin.
President Johnson's letter,
dated Jan. 17, was received
by Bernstein on the morning
of his death.

Orthodox to Fight
Year-Round DST

NEW YORK—A massive
effort to defeat pending fed.
eral and state legislative pro-
posals calling for the insti-
tution of year-round daylight
saving time has been launch-
ed by the commission on
legislation of Agudath Israel
of America, it was announced
by Rabbi Moshe Sherer,
executive president.
According to the Orthodox
Jewish movement, such bills
have been introduced in
Washington by Rep. Craig
Hosmer (Cal.) and Rep.
Norman Lent (N.Y.), and in
the New York State Legisla-
ture in Albany by Assembly-
man Clark Wemple.
In a memorandum to fed.
eral and state legislators,
the legislative commission
points out that expanding
daylight saving time to the
entire year would "severely
infringe upon the freedom
of religious practice" of ob-
servant Jews.
"Since the earliest time
when morning prayers can
commence is one hour before
sunrise, year-round daylight
saving time would mean that
during certain weeks of the
year morning prayers could
not begin before 7:20 a.m.,
which would create anoma-
lous situation for the large
numbers of religious Jews
whose employment requires
their presence prior to 8 or
8:30 a m.," the Aguda state-
ment declares.

Education Priority
Stressed to Zionists

MONTREAL (JTA) — KAI-
man Sultanik, member of the
executive of the Jewish Agen-
cy, asserted here that the
prevalent universal feeling of
Israel's capacity in terms of
security is having its side-
effects on Jews in the Dias-
pora by engendering among
them a sense of complacency.
Addressing a meeting of
.the Zionist Organization of
Canada, Sultanik, who is also
executive vice president of
the World Confederation of
General Zionists, warned that
"the blatant fact is that a
great wave of assimilation is
now swamping the Western
world, taking heavy tolls, es-
pecially among the Jewish
youth."
Sultanik urged that top
priority he given by Zionists
to Jewish education because
"for the Zionists the further-
ance of Jewish education and
the preservation of our heri-
tage represent the basic re-
quisites to ensure Jewish sur-
vival."

Tax Break for Parents
Paying Tuition

MONSEY, N.Y. (JTA) —
Rabbi Louis Bernstein, pres-
ident of the Rabbinical Coun-
cil of America, urged "the
United States Congress to
adopt legislation under which
the Internal Revenue Serv-
ice would give tax deduc-
tions for the tuition which
parents pay for their chil-
dren who attend religious
schools."
In his address to 500 dele-
gates attending the council's
national conference, he ob-
served "that the religious
school system which com-
prises a substantial portion
of the American educational
system faces its greatest
and worst financial crisis in
history."
Rabbi Bernstein stressed
that without some form of
assistance, the schools may
collapse and disappear.
Their disappearance, he
warned, will be a loss not
only to the religious com-
munities involved, but to the
whole educational system in
this country.
