Detroit News Des cribes Egypt

In an editorial entitled
"Egypt, caricature of a
state," the Detroit News Sun-

policy, which is no policy at
all." The editorial continued:
"Egypt is frustrated and
vengeful, a dangerous com-
bination. It can't be trusted

"An example of that is the
case of four Palestinian ter-
orists seized after assassinat-
ing Jordan's prime minister,
Wasfi Tell, on an official
visit to Cairo in 1971. The
world will recall the horrify-
ing story of the fanatics, who
boasted of drinking Tell's
blood as he lay dying. The
four were members of the
Black September organiza-
tion, guilty of the Munich
Olympic massacres and more
recently foiled in a Thailand
attempt to repeat the Mu-
nich horror on Israeli em-
bassy officials they had seized
in Bangkok.
"The four were put on trial
for murder in Cairo, where
they swore in court they
would "get" Jordan King
Hussein. The Egyptian su-
preme court released them
on bail 10 months ago while
the trial lawyers argued le-
gal procedure. The govern-
ment housed them in luxury.
Now, it is revealed, they
have been released, free to
leave Egypt, their trial still
uncompleted.
"Any government which
can condone murder of visit-
ing diplomats by foreigners
isn't really worthy of the
name, particularly at a time
when no part of the world is
immune f r o m terrorism.
What a caricature of a na-
tion Egypt has become — no
war, no peace, no policy, no
dignity, no integrity, no mor-
ality. How can any negotia-
tions with such a pitiable
state be meaningful?"
