gotiations with Israel on a
peace settlement if the Is-
raelis will indicate some flex-
ibility on the issue of Jeru-
salem.
The idea, which is be-
lieved to have been discuss-
ed indirectly with Israeli
officials, involves the return
of the Christian and Moslem
quarters of the Old City, in
eluding the Moslem holy
places, to Jordan sovereign-
ty.
The Jewish and Armenian
quarters of the Old City and
all of the new city would re-
main Israeli.
In an interview last week,
Deputy Premier Yigal Allon
said Israel would be prepared
to grant sovereign extraterri-
torial status, similar to that
of a foreign embassy, to the
Moslem holy places in the
Old City. He predicted a
government crisis would be
precipitated in such a ease
but said Prime Minister
Golda Meir and the Labor
Party were prepared to ac-
cept that consequence if a
genuine peace agreement
with Jordan could be achiev-
ed.
