meeting as new president of
the Jewish National Fund in
Detroit was a sparkling one
. . . bringing in a case of
champagne and serving the
bubbling stuff after the close
of business ... Charlie made
good his first promise as the
new local JNF head . . .
"Free champagne at every
directors' meeting." . . .
Larger quarters are being
sought for the meetings, and
Charlie remarked, "Let's
make it more interesting,
too. Then maybe so many
people won't have the flu or
be out of town on meeting
nights." . . . It was a good
first session for Charlie . . .

and levity . . Pearl Nosan
broke up a moment of too-
long serious discussion with
a laugh-getting remark that
split more than a few sides
. . . Sam Simmer kept puff-
ing on his cigar, while Dr.
Sidney Lieb in the next seat
was getting greener by the
second until he had to get
up for air ... Seat was im-
mediately taken by someone
who didn't mind Sam's
smoke and received a pat on
the back from him .
