Two "editorial apologies"
for the use of the swastika
within the Magen David in
Wayne State University's
South End appeared this
week to have "obviated" of-
ficial replies which were to
have been published late last
week or during the present
week.
But the apologies have
been branded insufficient,
and some call them half-
hearted.
The two most notable let-
ters of protest against the
articles published in the
South End were from Prof.
Esther Broner and from a
junior student, Saul Glogo-
wer. Accompanying the lat-
ter was an article by a Jewish
Marxist and anti-Zionist who,
while regretting the Nazi
swastika aspect, nevertheless
approved of the texts of Rev.
J. N. Booth's articles.

Glogower especially pro-
tested against the charge by
Booth that the death of 6.000,-
000 Jews is questionable. In
his articles, Booth used ex.
aggerated figures about the
number of Jews in the world.
He even resorted to the 18,-
000,000 figure. The latest
figures authoritatively given
in the 1972.3 American Jew.
ish Year Book, from studies
by the American Jewish
Committee, is 14,236,000. The
figures were published in
The Jewish News on Dec. 22,
1972.

Rev. Booth's anti-Israel
church sermons and articles
in the WSU paper are be-
lieved to stem from the pro-
paganda of the American
Council for Judaism, which

of the mail is critical of a re-
cent series of articles deal-
ing with the Arab-Israeli
problems in the Middle East.
Especially disturbing, he
said, was an illustration of

a swastika centered in the
Star of David. (The South

End carried an apology re-
garding that particular illus-
tration in its Jan. 18 issue.)"

A meeting of the student
newspaper publications board
and the university's board of
governors was to have been
held on Thursday of this
week, but no action was ex-
pected of any drastic nature.

ing pending negotiations had
been accepted last Friday.

Dr. Yapko said the meet-
ings Friday and Sunday —
he claimed there also were
meetings on Monday and
Tuesday—were intended only
for the purpose of "talking
about minor points" in what
he claimed was an existing
contract. He refused to grant
that "talking" also meant
"negotiations."
