Race Separatism
Hit Drama of Soviet Jews Relived by Emigre, Colleague of Lerner
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
American Jewish Congress,
in a policy-making resolution
on the occasion of the birth-
day of the late Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr., con-
demned supporters of racial
separtism both in and out of
government and reaffirmed
its commitment to integra-
tion.
BY CHARLOTTE DUBIN
The story by now is a fa-
miliar one.
A young scientist is fired
from her job after applying
for permission to leave the
Soviet Union. Miraculously,
permission is granted, and
she, her young son and aged
mother emigrate to Israel.
Her husband must remain be-
hind, hoping against hope
that he, too, will win permis-
sion to emigrate.

Dr. Julia Shmookler will
relate the details again and
again during the next month.
Recently , the 36-year-old
mathematician was in Detroit
for a series of Allied Jewish
Campaign meetings, part of
a cross-country tour for the
United Jewish Appeal. She
was a last-minute substitu-
tion for Roman Rutman, a
Soviet Jew who also won his
battle for freedom only to
fall ill while on tour in the
U.S.
Dr. Shmookler's knowledge
of English and her academic
background help to stir s em-
pathy among those the UJA
hopes to reach with its mes-
sage. Israel must have vol-
unteer dollars to absorb
Soviet immigrants such as
Dr. Shmookler. It is a punish-
ing schedule she must keep,
but she — and others like
her — push on with almost
grim determination.
